Atiku, Obi, Amaechi others storm coalition launch In Abuja

In a bold move to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election, prominent opposition leaders have gathered at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja to formally launch a new political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Leading figures at the high-stakes event include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who ran as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2023, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, one of the most influential voices in Nigeria’s opposition bloc. Also in attendance are former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, both key political actors with nationwide influence.

The coalition is adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its unified platform. Recently, former Senate President David Mark was named interim National Chairman, while ex-Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola was appointed interim National Secretary—symbolizing an attempt to forge a united front from across Nigeria’s diverse political spectrum.

Other prominent politicians at the event include former federal lawmaker Dino Melaye; former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung; media mogul Dele Momodu; Senator Gabriel Suswam; Labour Party’s Senator Ireti Kingibe; former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha; and ex-Air Chief Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

Representatives of the PDP, Labour Party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and several other opposition movements also arrived for the political gathering, signaling what observers describe as one of the boldest attempts at opposition unification since 2015.

Sources within the coalition hinted that key declarations, a joint policy framework, and an interim leadership structure would be unveiled during the event as groundwork for a robust challenge to the APC-led government in 2027
