The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the public display of the personal particulars and academic credentials submitted by presidential candidates participating in the 2027 general election.

President Bola Tinubu did not list his primary and secondary school qualifications in the educational qualifications section of the personal particulars submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the 2027 presidential election.

The documents, published by INEC on Saturday in line with its revised timetable for the 2027 general election, contain the nomination papers and supporting credentials of presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

A review of Tinubu’s EC9 nomination form shows that the President listed only a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Business Administration obtained from Chicago State University in 1979 under the educational qualifications section.

The sections provided for his primary and secondary school qualifications were left blank.

However, Tinubu attached copies of his university degree certificate and National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, certificate to his nomination papers.

In the form, the President stated that he was born on March 29, 1952, in Lagos and described his occupation as “Politician.”

He also declared that he worked at Mobil Nigeria Limited between 1983 and 1992 before serving as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007.

He listed his current employer as the Federal Government of Nigeria from 2023 to date and stated that he had never been dismissed from public service.

INEC publishes Tinubu, Shettima’s credentials for public scrutiny ahead of 2027 polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the public display of the personal particulars and academic credentials submitted by presidential candidates participating in the 2027 general election.

The exercise, which began on Saturday, includes the nomination documents filed by President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his running mate, Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Documents contained in Tinubu’s Form EC9, seen during the display, show that he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University in the United States. His academic transcript indicates that the degree was awarded “with honours” on June 22, 1979.

The records also include his National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate, showing that he completed his mandatory service in Oyo State between December 1982 and November 1983.

According to the employment history provided in the form, Tinubu worked at Mobil Nigeria Limited from 1983 to 1992 before leaving for “advancement.” He later served as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 until the “legal end of tenure” and has held office under the Federal Government since 2023.

While the form lists his university qualification, the sections for his primary and secondary school attendance contain the entry “0000,” with no specific years indicated.

The documents also state that the President was born on March 29, 1952, in Lagos, giving his age as 74. His residential address is listed as No. 4 Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi, while his occupation is recorded as “politician.”

Shettima’s documents, on the other hand, provide details of his educational journey from the primary school level.

His Certificate of Primary Education, issued by the Ministry of Education of the former North-Eastern State, shows that he attended Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978. The certificate indicates that he graduated second in a class of 22 pupils, with English, History and Religious Knowledge identified as his best-performing subjects.

His West African Examinations Council certificate from Government Secondary School, Potiskum, dated June 1983, records six credits and passes, including a distinction in Religious Knowledge and Economics.

The Vice President later earned a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri in August 1989 before obtaining a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan.

His NYSC discharge certificate shows that he completed national service between October 1989 and October 1990.

INEC said the publication of the candidates’ details is in line with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which requires the commission to display candidates’ particulars within 21 days of receiving their nomination documents.

Explaining the purpose of the exercise, the commission said: “Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties.”

The nomination documents have been displayed at INEC offices across the country, including the commission’s Lagos State headquarters in Sabo-Yaba and local government offices in the affected constituencies.

Under the Electoral Act, members of the public are entitled to request certified true copies of candidates’ nomination forms and supporting documents from INEC. The law also allows individuals to challenge any alleged false declaration or forgery through the courts.

Meanwhile, campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and state assembly elections will commence later in accordance with INEC’s revised election timetable.

Lakurawa terrorist group kills 4 soldiers in deadly Sokoto attack

Published

By Mohammadu Ahmad

At least four soldiers are feared dead following an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbe, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on Friday.

The attackers, reportedly numbering more than 300, stormed the town on motorcycles and engaged troops in a fierce gun battle before allegedly attacking shops, vehicles and a hospital.

The heavily armed group was said to have arrived in Kebbe at about 10am, prompting soldiers deployed at a military base on the outskirts of the town to engage them.

A security expert in the state, Bashar Altine, who confirmed the incident, said four soldiers were feared to have died during the confrontation.

However, the reported casualty figure could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.

The spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, also confirmed that an attack occurred but said the command was still working to establish the details.

Rufai said he could not confirm reports of casualties, including the alleged deaths of the four soldiers.

Attempts to obtain confirmation from the spokesman of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, were unsuccessful, as he had yet to respond to a message sent to him as of press time.

Altine said the attackers moved into the heart of Kebbe after the confrontation with the troops, particularly the Sabon Gari area, where they allegedly broke into shops and stole large quantities of mobile phones and bread.

He said the militants also attacked a military vehicle equipped with a mounted rocket-propelled grenade, damaging three tyres and breaking its windscreen.

The attackers reportedly proceeded to the General Hospital, Kebbe, where they allegedly smashed the windows of vehicles parked within the hospital premises, including the vehicle of the Divisional Police Officer and an ambulance.

“They also seized mobile phones belonging to patients at the hospital,” Altine added.

He further alleged that the terrorists took four motorcycles belonging to residents before beginning their withdrawal from the town.

According to Altine, the attackers eventually left Kebbe in the evening through the direction of the police station and proceeded towards communities west of the town.

“Reports from villages west of Kebbe indicate that they entered Ungushi town, one of the districts in Kebbe Local Government Area,” he said.

Altine said there was no confirmation that any of the attackers had been killed despite the reported gun battle with security forces.

“As of the time of writing this report, we have not seen the body of even one Lakurawa fighter that the soldiers succeeded in killing,” he said.

Joseph Ezeokafor

By Ogechi Eloka

Kidnapped Anambra businessman, Joseph Ezeokafor chairman of Jezco Group of Companies, popularly known as Jezco, has regained his freedom.

According to a social media Facebook post by Fred Chukwuelobe, versatile journalist and public affairs commentator, Ezeokafor was released near the boundary between Enugu and Anambra States, close to Ebenebe, near Awka. He was subsequently picked up late at night (Friday) by a family member.

Ezeokafor, the father of popular social media personality Jowi Zaza, was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday while on his way to a prayer ground in Awka, Anambra State.

His release came after days in captivity, during which his abductors reportedly established contact with his family and initially demanded a ransom of N700 million before allegedly raising the demand to N1.5 billion.

Details surrounding his release, including whether any ransom was paid and where he was released, were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.

The development is, however, a major relief to the family, friends and associates of the businessman, whose abduction had generated widespread concern across Anambra and beyond.

Ezeokafor is the founder of Jezco Oil and Lubricants, a business he established in 1980 and subsequently expanded into other areas of manufacturing and business.
