Several protesters who gathered at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State on Sunday have been detained by police.
The demonstrators came together to mark the anniversary of the tragic shooting by soldiers on October 20, 2020.
Young activists opposing police brutality were advocating for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) due to ongoing abuses. In response to public outcry, the authorities dissolved SARS; however, the protesters remained steadfast in their commitment, particularly at the tollgate, which has become a symbolic site for the movement.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had imposed a curfew, but demonstrators chose to stay at the tollgate, leading to a military deployment.
Eyewitness accounts reported that soldiers opened fire, resulting in fatalities, a claim refuted by both military officials and the federal government. Amnesty International stated that at least 12 protesters lost their lives during the military’s intervention.
On the morning of the fourth anniversary of this tragic event, demonstrators assembled at the tollgate, singing songs and holding placards.
Despite their peaceful intentions, police attempted to disperse the crowd using tear gas and gunfire, leading to the arrest of several protesters.
