The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the apprehension of two Chinese nationals, identified as siblings, alongside two Nigerians in Enugu for allegedly attempting to export solid minerals without the required permits.
In a statement released by the Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC identified the suspects as Wang Jiang, Wang Richard, Donatus Agupusi, and Michael Benneth Agu.
Wang Jiang was reportedly detained at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu after airport security discovered stones suspected to be solid minerals in his luggage during baggage screening.
The other three suspects, including Nigerians Donatus Agupusi and Michael Benneth Agu, were taken into custody at the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate, according to the statement.
The arrest, the EFCC noted, followed intelligence from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on November 3, 2024, after Jiang was intercepted with three packages containing unidentified stones suspected to be solid minerals.
“Preliminary investigations into the matter revealed that Agupusi, owner of Great Wall Construction Limited, is the employer of the remaining suspects. Investigation also revealed that Jiang was attempting to travel out of the country with the solid minerals in order to carry out some tests on them in China,” the statement explained.
Further investigation indicated that none of the suspects had obtained permits to export the minerals to China.
“The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the statement added
