Moses Paul, an aide to Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, has revealed why some of Obi’s former associates in the banking and business sectors are avoiding him publicly.
Paul attributed their actions to fears of retribution from President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He made this claim during an interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica.
Recalling an experience, Paul shared how he traveled with Peter Obi to a conference in Kigali, where Nigerian business tycoons like Aliko Dangote were also present. He expressed disappointment that former friends of Obi in the banking sector deliberately avoided him during the event.
Paul said, “I traveled to Rwanda with Mr. Peter Obi for a conference attended by Alhaji Aliko Dangote and other leading Nigerian businessmen and bankers. It was disheartening to see people, who had been close associates of Peter Obi, avoiding him in public, simply because they feared retribution from the Tinubu administration.”
He continued, “It’s baffling that, in the 21st century, individuals are afraid to be seen with an opposition leader due to concerns about government retaliation. This shouldn’t be happening in Nigeria, a nation that represents the future of the black man on the global stage.”
