The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that former Ondo State governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Bamidele Akingboye, did not die naturally but was murdered.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Jimoh, disclosed that investigators have received the autopsy findings, enabling them to advance the probe and begin prosecution procedures.
He explained that the autopsy carried out on September 11, alongside fresh intelligence gathered by detectives, prompted the arrest and renewed detention of seven out of the fourteen members of the Akingboye family earlier questioned by police.
The Command is now awaiting legal guidance from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) on the appropriate charges to pursue.
Prior to this, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, had taken nine close relatives and personal aides into custody for interrogation over the circumstances of Akingboye’s death.
Among the initial leads examined by investigators was a questionable ₦50 million transfer from the late politician’s account, allegedly shared among some immediate family members, in addition to other suspicious activities.
CP Jimoh stated, “With the toxicology findings concluded, we await advice from the DPP so prosecution can begin against anyone found culpable of murder.”
Akingboye died on September 3 under unclear conditions, with relatives and aides saying his body was found in the backyard of his home.
His eldest son, Samuel Akingboye, who lives in Ondo State, reported the incident to authorities and demanded a full-scale investigation to clarify what led to his father’s death.
CP Olorundare Jimoh has reiterated his determination to expose the truth and ensure that anyone involved faces justice.
