The Anambra State High Court has shifted the hearing of three well-known native doctors—who have been in custody since February—until April 11, 2025.
Justice Jude Obiorah, who is presiding over the matter, said the case was adjourned to ensure proper service and arraignment of the defendants.
The individuals involved—Onyebuchi Okocha, popularly known as Onyeze Jesus; Chidozie Nwangwu, known as Akwa Okuko; and Ekene Igboekweze, alias Eke Hit—are facing multiple charges. These include allegations of using “supernatural powers” to generate wealth, manipulate destinies, conspiracy to commit felony, kidnapping, and obtaining property under false pretenses.
The trio, who many described as celebrity native doctors, was arrested by the state’s security task force, Agunechemba, and have remained in detention since February. Legal proceedings against them are filed under Suit Nos A/41C2025, A/40C2025, and A/42C2025.
Their prolonged detention—without trial or access to relatives—sparked widespread backlash and concerns about due process.
Speaking on behalf of the defendants, their lawyer, Remigus Okoli, said: “The state government came with a plot to remand the defendants, but proper service and giving the accused adequate time to prepare for defence are very fundamental as enshrined in the constitution and relevant laws of the state.”
Okoli added, “The law is on their side in defending the accused.”
Justice Obiorah granted the adjournment to ensure all legal protocols are observed. While Prosecution Counsel Mr. F.C. Okeke maintained that the charges had been duly served, the defence disputed this, insisting that service was not effected within the proper timeframe.
