President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to speak at a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 12, in commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

The event, which will take place at the House of Representatives chamber in Abuja, marks the 26th year of uninterrupted democratic governance in the country. June 12 is observed annually to honour the historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the most credible in Nigeria’s history. That election was won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola but subsequently annulled by the military regime led by General Ibrahim Babangida (retd).

The House of Representatives spokesman, Akin Rotimi, confirmed the president’s attendance in a statement released on Sunday. According to Rotimi, the announcement was first communicated through an internal memo from the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Danzaria.

“The Special joint sitting is scheduled to hold at the House of Representatives Chamber, National Assembly Complex, commencing at 11:00 AM, with preliminary proceedings ahead of the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at 12:00 noon,” the statement noted.

Themed “26 years of democracy: Renewing our commitment to national development,” the 2025 Democracy Day celebration will include goodwill messages from former National Assembly leaders. President Tinubu is also expected to confer national honours on selected lawmakers during the event.

“This joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the statement added.“It underscores the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.”

Citizens were also encouraged to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s progress. “The House of Representatives urges all Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Democracy Day as a time for reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.”
