Sacked police commissioner

The Police Service Commission ( PSC ) has relieved Mrs. Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin of her duties as the Commissioner of Police for Edo State following the tragic killing of 16 Hausa-Fulani travelers in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, on March 27, 2025.

A statement released by the Commission confirmed that Otimenyin, who had been appointed as the 49th Commissioner of Police for the state on January 16, 2025, has been replaced by Monday Agbonika.

Betty Otimenyin succeeded CP Peter Umoru Ozigi after his retirement on January 25, 2025.

Monday Agbonika, the new appointee, was previously the Commissioner of Police for the Mounted Troop and Force Equitation Officer at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The PSC urged Agbonika to take proactive measures in addressing the rising crime rate in Edo State and focus on restoring public confidence in the police force.

Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, stated that Agbonika was advised to engage with key stakeholders, document every incident, and ensure transparency in his actions.

The Commission also directed him to prioritize the investigation of the recent killings in the state.

Agbonika, a seasoned officer with over 32 years of experience in various police roles, expressed his commitment to adhering to the law and working closely with the Inspector General of Police for guidance.

His career includes stints as Commissioner of Police for Communications (Operations), Deputy Commissioner at Interpol, and various leadership roles in operations, investigations, and police management.

The PSC’s action follows the public outcry and concern over the violence in Edo State, with authorities now hoping that Agbonika’s leadership will help stabilize the situation
