Yet-to-be identified gunmen in the early hours of Thursday attacked the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), a section of the police, at Akabukwu Uruagu, Nnewi in North Local Government Area of Anambra State leaving some dead at the wake.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen began operations at the area around 7:00 am shooting for unknown reasons which attracted the patrol team of the police operatives who were informed of the presence of the attackers.
Arrival of the police, the source said, led to a gun battle when three persons were eventually gunned down and the police patrol vehicle set ablaze.
Some people said the victims were members of the RRS but others said one was a civilian who was caught by a strayed bullet.
When contacted, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga could not react as his phone was busy.
