A professor at the Delta State University, Emeka Chukwuma, has been tragically killed by unknown gunmen at his residence in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The 56-year-old academic had returned to his hometown, Umueji in Asaba, last Friday for his routine weekend visit when the attackers struck at his home in the St. Bridges area of the Umueji quarter.

“Prof. Emeka Chukwuma was assassinated in Asaba on Friday night,” a source confirmed.

“He is a lecturer at Delta State University, Abraka. After the Anwai campus became Dennis Osadebey University, he started teaching at the main Abraka campus. Prof. Chukwuma regularly came home on weekends, but this time, he was killed in his house.

“As I speak to you now, Asaba is no longer safe. We are confused over the situation,” the source added.

The incident has sparked alarm among Asaba residents, who have raised concerns about the growing wave of violent crimes, including murders and kidnappings, in the area. Many are urging security agencies to strengthen measures to safeguard lives and property.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the killing, saying, “Yes, it is confirmed. The matter has been reported to the police, and we are investigating the incident to apprehend those responsible.”

The police are continuing efforts to identify and arrest the culprits.
