The new President of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), Engr. Felix Olu has decried the lack of adequate, reliable, cost-effective and sustainable electricity reason for weak economy, Japa syndrome, youth idleness/restiveness, high cost of goods/services and insecurity in many parts of the country.

Olu made this statement during his official Investiture Ceremony as the 21st President of NIEEE on Saturday, 2nd March, 2024 in Abuja. He said it is a challenge for all Electrical/Electronic Engineers at this particular time, the long standing electric power supply challenges of Nigeria seems to be getting drastically worse.

According to him, all other sectors of economy depend on electricity supply to perform optimally and as such NIEEE will not stand and watch the sectors fail.

Consequent upon these national challenges, the NIEEE President appealed to all its members to heed to Institute calls towards achieving efficient results.

“We need to volunteer whenever the Institute calls, you need to sponsor your Institute to success. We need all the cooperation we can get to succeed. You need to support CIEEEN when she comes calling, to enable it stand on its legs. You will need to oblige the Chartered Institute her dues when fixed; frequently, we will announce programmes and invites and all members are expected to attend such meetings and make contributions,” he appealed.

Expressing concern to the state of the economy that is heavily lathened with challenges, NIEEE President declared that it is time for the Institute to reroute its history and set priorities right to carry out only cost-effective activities.

He said, “This administration will pursue this deal. I hereby appeal to our members to come with us in this journey for more efficient results.”

The President however, announced that the NIEEE will this year mark its 4th decades of existence and it coincided with the 20th Edition of the ICEPT which will hold from 14th – 18th October, 2024.

The NIEEE, through its struggle for engineering professionalism in the fight against quackery, achieved for the first time in Engineering in Nigeria, the signing into law, the Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (CIEEEN) Act 2022 in April 2023.

BY the amended law of the Institute, NIEEE now covers – Electronic and Computing Engineering; Power and Clean Energy Engineering; Information and Communications Technology Engineering; Instrumentation, Control and Automation Engineering; Avionic and Space Engineering and Embedded/Emerging Technologies.
