Mahmood, INEC chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has addressed recent media claims regarding the recognition of specific individuals as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP).

INEC also responded to reports suggesting the reinstatement of a particular individual as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following listings on its official website.

In a statement issued by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, the Commission firmly stated, “However, the reports are false and misleading. The Commission has not made any decision in respect of either the LP or PDP.”

Oyekanmi explained that the names of the National Officers of the LP were previously uploaded to the commission website as a result of a court order, which is unrelated to the recent Supreme Court judgement. He further clarified, “In the same manner, the name of the National Secretary of the PDP on the same website was neither deleted nor reinstated.”

He added that; “as a law-abiding institution, INEC is currently reviewing the Supreme Court ‘s judgement concerning the Labour Party” and assured the public that it will communicate its decision at the appropriate time.
