A violent clash between rival cult groups during the Nibo Onwa Asaa festival in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State has reportedly left several people dead. The confrontation, which occurred on Sunday, caused panic and unrest across the community.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene with gunfire ringing out throughout the festival. “Gunshots were heard everywhere, causing panic and confusion,” a resident recounted.
Though the exact number of fatalities is yet to be confirmed, multiple reports indicate that several individuals were shot near a restaurant, with additional casualties recorded in other parts of Nibo.
In another incident, gunmen reportedly opened fire in Nodu Village, Okpuno, resulting in further casualties.
In response to the unrest, the Anambra State Police Command has intensified security in the area.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered swift action to address the suspected cult-related violence. Ikenga urged residents with information to come forward, assuring them of confidential handling of all tips.
The authorities are continuing investigations, and residents are advised to remain vigilant.
