Forum of Traditional Titled Men of Ogbunike in Oyi LGA of Anambra, reaffirmed commitment to the 1978 Igwe Ogbunike Constitution.

The forum said the constitution is the only legitimate framework for selection and election of a new traditional ruler.

Dr. Obi Anyanyo stated that the Forum reaffirmed its position due to the prolonged vacancy on the throne of Ogbunike.

The vacancy followed the passing of Igwe Ositadimma Umenyiora of Ogbunike six years ago.

“The statement stated that it must preserve and protect the sanctity of the Ogbunike throne.

It called on sons and daughters of the community to uphold traditions and legal foundations that had guided Ogbunike through generations.

“This development follows stakeholders meeting convened by Commissioner, Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne.

“Representatives of Ogbunike Progressive Union (OPU), Council of Ndichie, aspirants to the throne and others from across Ogbunike were present.

“During the engagement, the Commissioner directed the utilizatiin if Section 6(2) of the 1978 Igwe Ogbunike Constitution for the emergence of an Igwe for Ogbunike..

“We unanimously agreed that the 1978 Igwe Ogbunike Constitution remains the only valid legal document governing the Igweship selection process.

“OPU and the late Igwe Ositadimma Umenyiora signed the document, giving it full legitimacy and the collective endorsement of Ogbunike.

“The Constitution has been in use since the inception of the Igweship contest.

“All attempts to amend or review the constitution have not been officially ratified and therefore do not supersede the 1978 document.

“In line with the directive of the Anambra State Government, any effort to install a new Igwe must strictly follow Sec. 6(2) of the constitution.

“It provides for the whole community to participate in the Igweship election.

“The community firmly rejects any reference to l unauthorized amendments of the 1978 Constitution for the purpose of Igweship selection.

“The Forum rejects the plan orchestrated by the leadership of OPU and the kangaroo Constitution Draft Committee.

“The plan disenfranchise the youths, Umuada, and citizens of Ogbunike below 52 years from participating in the Igwe Ogbunike election.

“Let wise counsel prevail.”
