Justice G. C. Aguma of the High Court of Rivers State and Justice A. O. Nwabunike of the Anambra State High Court have been barred from performing judicial duties by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
The NJC, chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, reached this decision during its 107th meeting held on November 13 and 14, 2024.
Both judges were suspended for one year without pay and will be placed on a two-year watch list after serving their suspension.
Additionally, the Council took disciplinary actions against five other serving judicial officers for various forms of misconduct.
Two judicial leaders were also recommended for compulsory retirement due to age falsification.
The Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice T. E. Chukwuemeka Chikeka, and the Grand Kadi of Yobe State, Hon. Kadi Babagana Mahdi, are to step down following confirmed discrepancies in their declared ages.
The NJC reviewed the report of its Preliminary Complaints Assessment Committee, which handled 30 petitions. Out of these, 22 were dismissed for lack of merit, while two others were found to be sub judice. The Council set up six committees to further investigate other complaints and petitions.
Among other decisions, a committee was established to examine all allegations and petitions involving Hon. Justice O. A. Ojo, the Chief Judge of Osun State.
