The Department of State Services (DSS) has intervened in the standoff between the Dangote Refinery and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), leading to a suspension of the union’s nationwide strike.
The resolution came after a closed-door meeting held at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, where both parties were brought to the table. Following the talks, NUPENG leadership instructed its members to put the industrial action on hold.
At the meeting were top government officials, including the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi; and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha. The Dangote Refinery team was led by Sayyu Dantata.
Labour leaders were also in attendance, among them Mr. Akpouha Williams of NUPENG, Mr. Benson Upah representing the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Dr. N.A. Toro of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Details of the agreement reached are expected to be made public soon.
