Portugal have once again etched their name in European football history, lifting their second UEFA Nations League trophy after a nail-biting victory over Spain in a dramatic final decided by penalties.

The clash in Rotterdam lived up to its billing, offering end-to-end action, stunning goals, and nerve-wracking drama.

Spain took an early lead in the 21st minute when Martín Zubimendi capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home La Roja’s opener.

But Portugal responded in style—just four minutes later, Nuno Mendes unleashed a thunderous strike from the edge of the box to level the score.

The tempo remained electric as Spain regained the lead before halftime. Mikel Oyarzabal, assisted brilliantly by Pedri, made it 2-1 with a composed finish. The second half saw Portugal press hard for an equaliser, and Bruno Fernandes thought he had found it early on—but his goal was ruled out after a tense VAR review confirmed he was offside.

Cristiano Ronaldo brought Portugal back into the contest in the 59th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the area following a deflected cross from Mendes. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was forced off with an apparent injury in the 86th minute, making way for Gonçalo Ramos.

With the score locked at 2-2 after ninety minutes, extra time was required to separate the two sides. Portugal dominated the first period of extra time, with Mendes and Leão creating several dangerous opportunities.

Spain regained control in the latter stages, dictating possession but failing to break down the Portuguese defence. The final was ultimately decided by penalties, where both teams converted their first three spot-kicks.

Alvaro Morata’s miss in the fourth round proved decisive, handing Portugal the initiative. Ruben Neves calmly converted the final penalty, sealing a memorable victory and a second Nations League title for Portugal
