Factual Reportage

There is a looming constitutional crisis in Rivers state, as youths have taken over the secretariat of some of the local government areas, following disagreement over the tenure of the council chairmen

This action is coming following the expiration of the three-year tenure of the elected Chairmen on 17th of June.

There has been a disagreement between the state governor, Siminialayi Fubara, and the factional state House of Assembly headed by Martin Amaewhule as speaker, which is loyal to former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike

While the executive arm had insisted that the tenure of the local government chairmen have ended, the Martin Amaewhule led Rivers State House of Assembly, which had earlier repelled the State Local Government Authority, elongated their tenures for six months upon expiration.

The  Amaewhule led assembly had vetoed the tenure elongation bill into law, after governor Fubara had declined to give his assent to it

However, while the executive arm of the state has maintained that the LGA chairmen should vacate office on expiration of their tenure, the assembly members who are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, insisted that they would not vacate office.

Reports on Monday morning, reveal that youths barricaded some of the LGA council secretariats in the state, insisting that the chairmen must vacate offices upon the expiration of their three years mandate

Disclosure News reports that the angry youth converged on the various council headquarters as early as 8am to take over the secretariats

Some of the affected headquarters included Asari Toru LGA, Akuku Tori LGA and Degema LGA councils

The angry youths who said they would not allow the chairmen or any member of their team to return to the premises after the holidays, maintained that they must give peace a chance and vacate offices as their tenures have constitutionally expired

The Rivers state police command has however drafted their vans which is currently stationed at the Port Harcourt City LGA, as well as Obiakpor and other LGA secretariats to maintain peace and order
