RMAFC begins nationwide review of government officials pay package

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has commenced a comprehensive review of remuneration packages for political, public and judicial office holders across Nigeria.

The move was confirmed in a statement released Thursday in Abuja by Mrs. Maryam Yusuf, Head of the Commission’s Information and Public Relations Unit.

Speaking at a retreat organised by the commission in Kano, Mr. Mohammed Usman, Chairman of RMAFC’s Remuneration and Monetisation Committee, said the exercise is critical to strengthening Nigeria’s governance framework.

According to Usman, the review seeks to harmonise existing reports and establish a single reference document to guide remuneration for office holders nationwide.

“The effort is also a significant move towards the implementation of one of the commission`s core mandates,’’ he said.

He explained that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) empowers RMAFC to determine pay structures for political, public and judicial office holders at every tier of government.

Usman added that previous steps had been taken to adjust salaries in line with economic realities.

“The RMAFC carefully considered a wide range of perspectives, including memoranda from stakeholders, public hearings and ministerial submissions, while also drawing from economic indicators and remuneration practices in other countries.”

He stressed that the review process is about more than numbers, focusing also on sustainability and the government’s capacity to implement any changes.

“The commission has equally analysed the capacity of government to implement the review package, ensuring that recommendations remain fair, realistic and sustainable,” he said.

Usman revealed that his committee had been directed to merge earlier reports and subsequent addendums into a single document to create a clear, actionable framework.

He urged participants at the retreat to leverage their diverse expertise to ensure balanced outcomes.

“I implore everyone to contribute towards achieving the purpose of our gathering, given our varied knowledge and wealth of experience.

The retreat is expected to set a sustainable framework for political, public and judicial office holders’ remuneration in line with the mandate of the commission,” he added.
