At least 12 people were confirmed dead,31 injured on Saturday,21st of December,2024 in Okija town, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra state, while scrambling for Christmas rice.

It was gathered that the distribution of food items has always been an annual tradition for the philanthropist Obiejesi during most festive seasons, and is part of his foundation’s effort to assist his kinsmen, often culminating in a large carnival.

However, this year’s distribution was marred by deaths and injuries as the surging crowd became uncontrollable, leading to a stampede that had so far claimed twelve lives, leaving others injured.

Reacting to the ugly incident, Prince Samben Nwosu ,an aspirant in the forthcoming Anambra South Senatorial District Election ,under the platform of People’s Democratic Party(PDP), said he was deeply saddened to hear about the tragic incident that occurred during the Christmas rice gift distribution.

He said the loss of many precious lives, particularly women, in the stampede was devastating.

“My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the victims. No words can adequately express the pain and grief they must be feeling. I can only imagine the shock, sorrow, and anguish that this senseless tragedy has brought upon your community and Anambra South in general”he noted

He described Chief Obiejesi as a generous member of his community, adding that his kindness and generosity in organizing the rice gift distribution were meant to bring joy and relief to those in need.

He also added that this unfortunate incident has brought unspeakable pain and sorrow.

“Please accept my sincerest condolences, Brother Knight. May God grant the souls of the departed women eternal rest and peace. May He also comfort and strengthen their families, and our entire community, during this difficult time”he prayed
