A devastating accident at Upper Iweka in Onitsha, Anambra State, has left six people dead and several others injured after a truck lost control and crashed into pedestrians, two tricycles, and a commercial bus.
The incident occurred on Saturday night around 9 p.m. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck veered off course, plowing into unsuspecting road users.
Confirming the tragedy, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that authorities had secured the scene to restore order and begin an investigation.
Ikenga, in a statement on Sunday, said, “The accident claimed the lives of six persons and left a few others with various degrees of injury.
“The aim of the takeover is to ensure order in the area as well as to facilitate investigations into the incident.
“Eyewitness accounts reveal that the accident occurred as a result of loss of control of a truck that rammed into pedestrians, two tricycles, and a commercial bus loaded with passengers.”
According to the police, some of the injured victims are currently receiving medical attention, while the deceased have been taken to the morgue. Authorities have also contacted some of the victims’ relatives.
“To this end, the Command while condoling the families and friends of the deceased and wishing the injured a quick recovery, cautions drivers to always do the necessary checks before plying the road,” Ikenga added.
