Suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have launched an attack on a police station in Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State, resulting in the death of two police officers.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Monday, September 16, 2024.
The attackers, armed with explosives, reportedly targeted the Umunze Police Station while attempting to enforce the Monday sit-at-home order.
In response, Joint Security Forces—including the Military, Police, Navy, Civil Defence, and local vigilante groups—recovered five unexploded bombs from the scene.
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that two officers lost their lives in the gun battle, which also left part of the police station engulfed in flames. “The assailants invaded the facility with explosives, shooting sporadically. Unfortunately, two officers on duty paid the supreme price while resisting the attackers,” Ikenga said.
The bodies of the deceased officers have been recovered and sent to the morgue. Following the attack, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, visited the site to assess the damage and reinforce security measures in the area. The security forces are now on the trail of the assailants.
This attack adds to the rising violence linked to the enforcement of the sit-at-home order in the Southeast, a directive that has led to numerous clashes between separatist groups and security personnel in the region
