UK-bound cannabis seized at Lagos airport as NDLEA nabs suspects with suck and die in Kano
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a shipment of cannabis, also known as “Loud,” concealed in a duvet and destined for the United Kingdom.
The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, revealed in a statement on Sunday that the consignment was uncovered on Tuesday at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
According to the statement, NDLEA operatives arrested two suspects, Adakole Sunday and Austin Balogun, in connection with the shipment.
“Six parcels of the psychoactive substance with a gross weight of 3.50 kilograms were concealed inside the duvet,” the statement read.
It further detailed Balogun’s confession. “In his statement, Austin Balogun, who is the main agent who hired Adakole, claimed he was paid N700,000 to cargo the consignment to the UK but spent a fraction of the money on export handling charges and the bulk to pay for an apartment.”
In a related operation, NDLEA officers raided a hideout in Ikorodu, Lagos, uncovering a cache of weapons and a substance known as “skuchies.”
“At least, two suspects—Joseph OAdewale and Biodun Adelakun—were arrested at Igbo Olomu, Ikorodu area of Lagos when NDLEA operatives raided their hideout in the community where seven litres of skuchies, a new psychoactive substance produced with black currant, cannabis, and opioids, were recovered,” Babafemi stated.
The raid also led to the seizure of firearms, including three locally made double-barrel rifles, a pistol, and several cartridges.
Meanwhile, another operation in Mushin on January 19 resulted in the seizure of 47 kilograms of skunk, a type of cannabis, and 25.46 kilograms of Nitrous Oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas.
The agency also extended its efforts beyond Lagos. A 26-year-old suspect, Adepoju Taiwo, was arrested in Ekiti State on January 23 with 1.95 kilograms of Canadian Loud. In another case, a suspect named Auwal Sani was apprehended in Kwara State on January 20, where NDLEA operatives seized 50,000 tramadol pills weighing 36.56 kilograms.
Additionally, in Kano State, officers arrested three suspects—Abubakar Lami, 45; Abba Sani, 35; and Auwal Aliyu, 32—recovering 13.1 kilograms of skunk and 125 litres of “suck and die,” a new psychoactive substance. A cannabis farm in Dawakin Kudu council area was also destroyed, and a suspect, Sabo Ali Muhammad, 45, was taken into custody.
