The Federal Ministry of Works has met with MTN and RCC Company Nig Ltd to discuss the slow funding and execution of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway project. The meeting, held on February 26, 2025, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, aimed to resolve the issues hindering the project’s progress.

The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, emphasized the need for quality and speedy delivery of the project. He reiterated that the contractor, MTN, is responsible for ensuring the project’s quality and timely completion. The Minister also expressed dissatisfaction with the use of substandard materials by the contractor, citing the use of peeled sand instead of river sand.

The meeting resolved that the construction of the Enugu-Onitsha dual-carriageway must be completed by May 10, 2026. Additionally, MTN will be held responsible for any failure of the road after construction due to shoddy work by the contractor. The Ministry also emphasized that there will be no variation or variation of price (VOP) on the project.

Senator Umahi also called on cement manufacturers to reduce the cost of cement to N7,000, citing the reduced cost of dollars and petrol. He argued that the current cost of cement, N9,500, is unjustified given the improved economic conditions.

The Honourable Minister of State for Works and the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring quality project outcomes and value for money. They urged the contractor to cooperate with the new paradigm under the Renewed Hope administration and deliver the project on record time.
