President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently hosting German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is in Nigeria for a three-day state visit.
The German leader arrived at the Forecourt of the State House in Abuja at 11:06 am on Wednesday, where he was warmly received by President Tinubu and members of Nigeria’s Executive Council.
Upon arrival, President Steinmeier was honored with a formal welcome that included the playing of the German national anthem, Deutschland über alles, followed by a rendition of the Nigerian anthem by the Brigade of Guards.
A ceremonial guard inspection was also held, marking the significance of the visit, which was further underscored by a 21-gun salute.
According to a statement from the German Embassy, President Steinmeier’s visit will include key meetings with President Tinubu and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Alieu Omar Touray.
He is also scheduled to visit Lagos, where he will engage with business leaders, explore Nigeria’s start-up ecosystem, and meet with cultural and civil society representatives.
In Lagos, President Steinmeier will meet prominent figures such as Dr. Nike Okundaye, renowned for her work at the Nike Art Gallery, and Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka.
This visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between Nigeria and Germany, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to Nigeria in October 2023, and President Tinubu’s official trip to Germany in November 2023.
The German Embassy emphasized that President Steinmeier’s visit highlights the strong and growing relationship between Nigeria and Germany, reaffirming Germany’s appreciation of Nigeria’s role in global affairs
