The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has assured consumers that it will always protect their right to quality electricity supply services from the Distribution Companies (DisCos).
NERC Commissioner, Consumer Affairs, Aisha Mahmud stated this on Thursday at a townhall meeting and complaints resolution forum in Kaduna, Kaduna state, in collaboration with Kaduna Electric.
According to the Commission’s statement posted on it X account, customers of Kaduna Electric at the meeting, had the opportunity to be enlightened on their rights and obligations while having their complaints resolved instantly by the customer care team of the DisCo under the supervision of the NERC Consumer Affairs Division.
In emphasizing the priority NERC accords to end-users of electricity, Mrs Mahmud said: “NERC is committed to protecting consumer rights and ensuring quality service delivery.”
NERC also developed the Customer Protection Regulations which are dedicated guidelines that distribution licencees are bound to comply with in providing improved services to their customers.
Mrs Mahmud stressed that “customers have the right to efficient and reliable electricity supply, and we’ve implemented initiatives like customer enumeration and prepaid meter deployment to achieve this.
The NERC Commissioner stressed further the importance of collaboration, noting that customers, Kaduna Electric and NERC must work together to overcome customer-centric challenges.
NERC also explained the rights and obligations of electricity consumers as they were informed that they have the right to a reliable electricity supply from their point load connected to the DisCo’s networks.
She hinted that customers also have the right to accurate billing based on their actual consumption, among others.
“The programme featured different sessions including interactive sessions and complaints resolution session which continues through Friday and ends on Saturday,” the statement revealed.
Similarly, NERC said it had stakeholders’ engagement on the integration of power plants into the ongoing SCADA/EMS system at its headquarters in Abuja. The event was declared open by NERC’s, Engr. Sanusi Garba.
