President Bola Tinubu has commended the Kaduna State Government’s free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit scheme.

Tinubu described the initiative as an example of practical, people-centred intervention capable of reducing transportation costs for Nigerians.

The scheme, involving 100 CNG powered buses, recorded about 3.2 million passenger trips and saved commuters more than N3.5 billion in its first year.

The President made the commendation in a post on his official X account, where he made special mention of Kaduna’s intervention.

“This is more of what we need to see at the subnational level,” Tinubu stated.

The commendation came amid renewed efforts by the Federal Government and the 36 states to accelerate the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme.

The initiative is aimed at reducing transportation costs and providing relief to Nigerians affected by rising fuel and commuting expenses.

At a meeting with governors on Aug. 27, Tinubu and the state governors agreed on coordinated action to reduce transportation costs.

The governors subsequently constituted an implementation committee under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to drive the initiative.

The committee is chaired by Kwara Governor and NGF Chairman, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Working with the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles, the committee is identifying priority transport corridors and appropriate interventions.

It is also developing an operational framework for effective implementation of the programme across the states.

The Federal Government says Nigeria’s abundant gas resources provide an opportunity to reduce dependence on imported fuels and exposure to global energy shocks.

Tinubu has ruled out a return to the petrol subsidy regime, saying such a move would expose the economy to international oil price fluctuations.

He said the government would instead support states adopting CNG transportation and other interventions capable of providing measurable relief to citizens.

Reacting to the commendation, Kaduna Governor Uba Sani expressed appreciation to Tinubu for recognising the state’s intervention.

Sani reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to policies aimed at protecting vulnerable households and expanding access to essential services.

“We deeply appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for this recognition and his administration’s continued support to subnational governments,” Sani said.

The governor said Kaduna had continued to set benchmarks in education, vocational training, skills development and CNG mass transportation.

“Kaduna remains the only subnational government providing free CNG mass transit rides to its citizens,” he said.

According to him, the scheme recorded about 3.2 million passenger trips and saved commuters more than N3.5 billion during its first year.

Sani said the intervention had become one of the state government’s major measures for cushioning the effects of petrol subsidy removal.

“Our commitment remains clear: to put people first, reduce the burden on vulnerable households and ensure dividends of governance reach ordinary citizens,” he said.

The free CNG transit scheme provides fare free transportation on designated routes, benefiting workers, traders, students and other residents.

The intervention forms part of the state government’s wider investments in education, skills development, economic inclusion and human capital development.

The state government said the scheme demonstrates how targeted public interventions can reduce household expenditure and improve access to affordable transportation.

The President’s recognition also places Kaduna’s experience within the Federal Government’s broader effort to promote cheaper and cleaner domestic energy alternatives.

The Kaduna Government said it would sustain the initiative and continue implementing policies designed to deliver tangible benefits to residents.(NAN).

The Nigerian Army troops have apprehended 15 suspected kidnappers, and rescued four kidnap victims in separate operations in Plateau and Benue.

An operational report made available on Sunday said troops also recovered suspected stolen food items and arrested another suspect allegedly linked to illegal possession of a firearm.

The report said the troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) arrested 11 suspects during a raid on Shere, Gwafan and Maza Hills in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau.

It said the suspects included three allegedly linked to a recent kidnapping incident and remained in military custody for further investigation.

According to the report, troops arrest a suspected criminal at Dong Kassa Community for alleged illegal possession of a firearm in another operation in Jos North.

It added that troops searched the suspect’s residence but recovered nothing significant.

“Earlier, troops responding to suspected criminal activities at Berger Junction, Mista-Ali, in Bassa Local Government Area, arrested two suspects.

“Troops also recovered a vehicle loaded with suspected stolen items, including palm oil, rice, sugar, seasoning cubes and an empty jerrycan.

“The suspects and recovered items were handed over to the Police at Mista-Ali Outpost for further action.

“In Benue, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) rescued four kidnap victims along the Takum-Katsina-Ala Road in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.

“The victims were subsequently reunited with their families,” it said. (NAN).

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted more than 1.3 million pills of tramadol and other opioids, as well as 6,000 kilograms of potent strains of cannabis, with a combined street value of more than N3.4 billion.

NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi, said in a statement on Sunday in Abuja that the breakthroughs were achieved in a string of major operations across Lagos, Edo, Niger, Delta, Ondo, Gombe, Imo and the FCT.

Babafemi said that top on the line up of successful operations was the interception of 1,200 parcels of Canadian Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis.

He said that the drug was with a gross weight of 603.75 kilograms and valued at N1.8billion.

He also said that NDLEA operatives arrested an alleged trafficker who impersonated as a senior police officer to evade scrutiny at checkpoints while ferrying drugs across state lines.

Babafemi added that the 49-year-old fake police officer was arrested on Wednesday, Sept. 16 by NDLEA operatives along the Benin-Onitsha expressway in Asaba, Delta.

He also added that the suspect was with 292.48 kilograms of skunk hidden in his silver Toyota Sienna bus.

“Investigation established that the suspect had long paraded himself as Godwin Emeka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, using a forged ID card to escape scrutiny at checkpoints while transporting illicit consignments.

“An accomplice, 39-year-old man was arrested along with him,”he said.

Meanwhile, in Edo, NDLEA operatives acting on intelligence stormed a location on Agbor Road, Benin City where they arrested 45-year-old man who used his auto-repair workshop as a front for storing illicit drugs.

Babafemi said that officers recovered 48 kilograms of Canadian Loud and 152 grams of methamphetamine, along with a metal box used to store the illicit substances.

At the Tin-Can Island Port in Lagos, a 40-foot container shipped from Montreal, Canada, and arrived on Sept.12, was placed under intensive monitoring by NDLEA operatives based on processed intelligence.

Babafemi said that the shipment was eventually subjected to a full joint physical examination with Customs and other security agencies on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

“The search uncovered 1,200 parcels of Canadian Loud weighing 603.75 kilograms, concealed inside 31 black jumbo bags loaded within two Toyota Sienna vehicles in the container,”he said.

He further said that NDLEA operatives in Niger, whilexon patrol along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway at Chachi, Tafa Local Government Area, on Tuesday, Sept. 15 arrested three young suspects.

Babafemi said that the suspects were with two locally fabricated AK-47 rifles and a magazine, a locally made pistol with magazine, and nine rounds of 9mm ammunition concealed in a black travel bag.

He added that the agency’s operatives similarly arrested two suspects on Friday, Sept. 18, along Abaji-Abuja highway.

“Over 1.1 million assorted tramadol tablets/capsules, codeine syrup, methamphetamine and Exol tablets concealed in eight sacks en route from Onitsha, Anambra state to Mararaba, Nasarawa state, were recovered from them.

” In another development, in Lagos, a suspected drug dealer was arrested on Friday, Sept. 18 at his residence in Aguda, Surulere with 48,900 pills of tramadol 225mg.

“Also, seven cartons of cannabis sativa weighing 59kg were intercepted at a logistics company with a suspect taken into custody,” he said.

In another operation in Lagos, Babafemi said that another suspected drug peddler was arrested at Apongbo with 998.38kg of nitrous oxide gas on Thursday, Sept.17.

“Additionally, a total of 154,480 capsules of tramadol were recovered from two suspects who were arrested at Barunde area and Gombe main market respectively in Gombe state on Friday, Sept. 18.

“However, a suspect was also arrested along the Owerri-Onitsha road, Imo state with 43.85kg of skunk on Friday, Sept. 18.

“Four suspects were nabbed during raid and destruction of 5,000 kilograms of skunk on a two-hectare cannabis farm in Ita-Ogbolu forest, Ondo state on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

“No less than 48kg of dry and fresh cannabis was recovered from the location for the prosecution of the suspects,”he said.

With the same vigour, Babafemi said that commands and formations of the agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation activities.

This, he said were taken to schools, worship centres, work places and communities among others in the past week.

“The places include; WADA enlightenment lecture to students and staff of St. Ferdinand School, Ogbomoso, Oyo; Unizik Secondary School, Awka, Anambra; Scholars Nursery and Primary School, Epe, Lagos, and Government Technical Training School, Jalingo, Taraba state.

“The Delta Ports Command of NDLEA paid a WADA advocacy visit to His Royal Majesty, King Couple Mackson Oromoni Mobene III, Pere Ama-Okosu of Ogbe-Ijoh Warri Kingdom, Delta state, among others,”he said.

Babafemi quoted the NDLEA chairman, retired, Brig.- Gen. Buba Marwa as commending the officers and men of Lagos, Tincan, Edo, Niger, Delta, Ondo, Gombe, Imo and FCT Commands for their professionalism and intelligence-driven approach to the various successful operations.

Marwa enjoined them and their colleagues across the country to continue with the current balanced approach to the drug control efforts of the agency.(NAN)
