Resident Doctors hopeful of averting nationwide strike after FG meeting
Nkem Okereh
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Tuesday expressed optimism that its planned nationwide strike could be averted following a meeting with the Federal Government.
NARD President, Dr Mohammad Suleiman, said this after a meeting convened by the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, to address the doctors’ grievances ahead of the Aug. 10 strike deadline.
The meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, was attended by the Ministers of Health, Labour and Finance, the Director-General of the Budget Office, officials of the Office of the Accountant-General, IPPIS and other relevant agencies.
Suleiman said the meeting produced timelines for resolving key issues, including salary arrears, promotion benefits, professional allowances and the welfare of house officers.
“Today, I can tell you our matters are solved. Solved in the sense that timelines have been agreed upon by various agencies of government on salary and promotion arrears,” he said.
According to him, government agreed to a one-week timeline for resolving outstanding salary-related issues, including those affecting resident doctors at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
He added that a directive had been issued to ensure house officers received their salaries promptly.
“He has given a standing order that before the 10th of every month, salaries of house officers must be paid.”
The NARD president said discussions also covered the payment of 19 months’ outstanding arrears arising from the adjustment of professional allowances approved by government.
“The Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Health will try to fast-track the completion of the CBA so that whatever is agreed can be accommodated in next year’s budget,” he said.
Suleiman also raised concerns over increasing attacks on health workers, revealing that 31 doctors and more than 20 other health personnel had been assaulted in the last 10 months.
He said the Federal Ministry of Health had agreed to issue directives to hospitals to strengthen security and create safer working environments.
“The Chief of Staff has taken it upon himself to introduce legislation so that assault on health workers will become an aggravated offence,” Suleiman said.
On whether the planned strike had been suspended, the NARD president said the association would first brief its National Executive Council before taking a final decision.
“I can’t stand here and tell you I have called off a strike. I have to report back to my National Executive Council and we will take a decision,” he said.
He, however, expressed confidence in the intervention of the Chief of Staff, noting that previous engagements led by him had produced positive outcomes for resident doctors.
Earlier, Gbajabiamila said the meeting was convened to avert the impending strike and ensure uninterrupted healthcare services across the country.
“At no time in any country’s life does a country need any strike because health is perhaps one of the most critical sectors that affects everybody,” he said.
Also speaking, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, said government remained committed to resolving the concerns of resident doctors through dialogue.
“We have worked extremely hard to ensure we maintain relative peace in a very fractured sector,” Pate said.
NARD had earlier given the Federal Government until Aug. 10 to implement the terms of a previously signed Memorandum of Understanding or face a nationwide strike.

Hardship: Public servants begin three-day warning strike

By Our Reporter
Public servants across Nigeria have commenced a three-day warning strike following a directive by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council over what the workers described as worsening economic and mental hardship.
The industrial action, which began at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026, is expected to run through Sunday, October 4.
The council directed its national and state leadership to mobilise workers for the action, with the directive contained in a circular dated October 1 and signed by the National Secretary of the JNPSNC, Olowoyo Gbenga.
The circular urged the council’s leadership to ensure that the strike notice reached workers across the country.
The decision, according to the council, followed the Federal Government’s alleged failure to respond to demands earlier presented to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21, 2026.

Explaining the commencement of the industrial action, the council stated, “Consequent upon the above, the strike shall start with effect from midnight on Friday, 2nd October, 2026 to Sunday October 4th, 2026.”
The council called on public servants at the federal, state and local government levels to participate in the warning strike, saying the action was aimed at drawing attention to the economic difficulties confronting workers and their dependants.
It stated, “In the same vein, all public servants in the services of federal, state and local governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, most especially, all workers, their dependants, vulnerable and hapless Nigerians are groaning terribly under the present economic hardship.”
The JNPSNC further expressed concern over the impact of the economic situation on workers, saying, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”
It also directed its leaders to commence immediate mobilisation for the industrial action, declaring, “The time to act and mobilise workers for the three-day warning strike is now!!!”
The warning strike comes against the backdrop of demands earlier submitted by the council to the Federal Government for measures to ease the pressure of rising living costs on workers.
Among the demands were a reduction in the price of petrol, an immediate wage award for workers and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.
The council had reportedly asked the Federal Government to bring down the pump price of petrol to N500 per litre, approve an immediate wage award and constitute a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage.
The demands followed continued concerns over the declining purchasing power of workers amid increases in the prices of essential commodities, transportation and other household needs.
In its latest circular, the council urged its members to circulate the strike notice and expressed optimism about the outcome of the industrial action.
“Please, disseminate the information!!! Surely, there is victory for us!!!” the circular added.
The council maintained that the warning strike would proceed as scheduled, with public servants across the federal, state and local government services expected to take part.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Ministry of Labour were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
