The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has confirmed that the number of fatalities from Wednesday’s multiple explosions in Karu has risen to 10.
Acting Director-General of FEMD, Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, provided the update in Abuja on Thursday.
According to reports, a truck driver lost control near Karu Bridge while heading toward Nyanya on the Abuja-Keffi Expressway, crashing into several vehicles stuck in traffic. The impact triggered a massive explosion involving multiple cars.
Mohammed stated that five people were found dead at the scene, including four victims who were burned beyond recognition, while another person succumbed to injuries at the hospital on Wednesday.
“This morning when I asked my officials to go round, they discovered that four others had died in the hospital. This brings the death toll to 10,” he said.
He urged motorists to drive cautiously by obeying traffic regulations, avoiding reckless driving, and ensuring proper vehicle maintenance.
Similarly, the Head of Forecasting, Response, and Mitigation at FEMD, Mr. Mark Nyam, confirmed that eight bodies were taken to the Karu Hospital morgue, one to Asokoro District Hospital, and another to the National Hospital, Abuja.
Nyam further disclosed that more than 30 people with varying degrees of burns were receiving medical treatment at different hospitals.
