The Kano State government has set aside N2.5 billion to fund quarterly mass weddings across all 44 local government areas of the state in 2025.
Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Shanono, revealed this during a press briefing on the breakdown of the 2025 budget, which was recently passed into law by the State House of Assembly.
According to Shanono, the government has earmarked N91.32 billion for governance and service delivery initiatives, including the mass wedding program. He explained that the initiative aims to promote social responsibility, transparency, and human rights while fostering a fair and sustainable society that enhances the standard of living for Kano residents.
Additionally, N1 billion has been allocated for Ramadan feeding, while N955 million will be used for a manpower statistics survey, a general household survey, and data collection on out-of-school children. Another N1.049 billion has been set aside for the purchase of printing machines, rehabilitation of the water system, and acquisition of library equipment for the Government Printing Press.
Shanono further detailed that N267.6 million has been budgeted for infrastructure improvements, the production of an Islamic calendar, and support for Islamic Da’wah programs and welfare packages for new converts to Islam.
Other allocations include N589 million for security research and empowerment programs, as well as initiatives to address street begging. Furthermore, N200 million has been designated for office furniture procurement, maintenance of the accountant-general’s office, and the development of financial management software.
The approved 2025 budget stands at N719.75 billion, marking a 31% increase from the initial N549.16 billion submitted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Shanono noted that recurrent expenditure amounts to N262.67 billion, while capital expenditure is N457.08 billion—an overall 65% increase compared to the 2024 budget.
