Nigeria, China ties stronger relationship on cultural, food festival

Our Reporter
The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have agreed to collaborate and strengthen more cordiality in cultural diplomacy, tourism and people oriented relations between the two countries.
This was revealed in the 2026 Nigeria/China Food Festival, themed: ‘Bridging Culture Through Cuisine,’ which brought together government officials, diplomats, chefs, hospitality professionals and cultural practitioners as both countries marked 55 years of formal diplomatic relations.
In his keynote address on behalf of the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barr Hannatu Musa-Musawa, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Abdulkarim Ozi Ibrahim said food was a powerful tool, preserving heritage, creating livelihoods and bringing people together.
He said: “Food does not merely nourish the body. It tells stories, preserves heritage, creates livelihood, and brings people together.”
The minister said Nigeria’s tourism and creative industry identified food and beverages as the largest sub-sector of the country’s tourism economy, making it an important part of Nigeria’s tourism identity and global cultural brand.
She noted that Nigeria and China established diplomatic relations since February 1971, and have since expanded cooperation across trade, infrastructure, education, technology, culture and people-to-people exchange of ideas.
“The festival would create opportunities for chefs, food entrepreneurs, hospitality businesses and cultural practitioners to exchange knowledge, access new markets and promote Nigerian stories through food,” she stated.
In his earlier speech, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Zhou Hongyou  described the festival as a meeting point between two ancient civilisations with rich culinary traditions.
Hongyou said China and Nigeria would continue to deepen cooperation in culture, education, arts, sports and youth development, while strengthening people-to-people exchange.
“Food offered an important window into the history, geography and identity of a people, as guests would experience 14, (fourteen), dishes representing China’s major culinary regions alongside Nigerian delicacies from the country’s six geopolitical zones.”
He also highlighted growing economic relations between both countries, saying that China’s zero-tariff treatment for African countries with diplomatic relations with Beijing offered Nigeria an opportunity to increase exports to the Chinese market.
Also, Director-General, National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism, (NIHOTOUR), Abisoye Fagade in his speech noted that Nigeria possessed a rich culinary heritage capable of supporting a globally recognised food tourism industry, pointing that “the festival’s success should be measured by the partnerships, businesses, skills and friendships it generates.
“Nigeria must package, standardise, promote and commercialise its indigenous cuisines while preserving their authenticity,” he added.
The event featured Nigerian and Chinese cultural performances, food exhibitions and cuisines of both countries with a view to exploring opportunities, strengthening the bond that holds them together.

Hardship: Public servants begin three-day warning strike

Published

By Our Reporter

Public servants across Nigeria have commenced a three-day warning strike following a directive by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council over what the workers described as worsening economic and mental hardship.

The industrial action, which began at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026, is expected to run through Sunday, October 4.

The council directed its national and state leadership to mobilise workers for the action, with the directive contained in a circular dated October 1 and signed by the National Secretary of the JNPSNC, Olowoyo Gbenga.

The circular urged the council’s leadership to ensure that the strike notice reached workers across the country.

The decision, according to the council, followed the Federal Government’s alleged failure to respond to demands earlier presented to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21, 2026.

Explaining the commencement of the industrial action, the council stated, “Consequent upon the above, the strike shall start with effect from midnight on Friday, 2nd October, 2026 to Sunday October 4th, 2026.”

The council called on public servants at the federal, state and local government levels to participate in the warning strike, saying the action was aimed at drawing attention to the economic difficulties confronting workers and their dependants.

It stated, “In the same vein, all public servants in the services of federal, state and local governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, most especially, all workers, their dependants, vulnerable and hapless Nigerians are groaning terribly under the present economic hardship.”

The JNPSNC further expressed concern over the impact of the economic situation on workers, saying, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”

It also directed its leaders to commence immediate mobilisation for the industrial action, declaring, “The time to act and mobilise workers for the three-day warning strike is now!!!”

The warning strike comes against the backdrop of demands earlier submitted by the council to the Federal Government for measures to ease the pressure of rising living costs on workers.

Among the demands were a reduction in the price of petrol, an immediate wage award for workers and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council had reportedly asked the Federal Government to bring down the pump price of petrol to N500 per litre, approve an immediate wage award and constitute a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage.

The demands followed continued concerns over the declining purchasing power of workers amid increases in the prices of essential commodities, transportation and other household needs.

In its latest circular, the council urged its members to circulate the strike notice and expressed optimism about the outcome of the industrial action.

“Please, disseminate the information!!! Surely, there is victory for us!!!” the circular added.

The council maintained that the warning strike would proceed as scheduled, with public servants across the federal, state and local government services expected to take part.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Ministry of Labour were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

She assured the people that her intervention in the school would not end with the renovation, announcing plans to undertake solar electrification of the classroom block as the next phase of support.

According to her, quality education remains critical to community development and nation-building, stressing that investments in educational infrastructure are investments in the future of young people.

She also pledged to continue collaborating with the leadership of the OCDU to identify and execute additional projects that would improve the living conditions of residents.

The community further applauded the NDPHC boss for her contributions to youth empowerment, employment opportunities and other initiatives aimed at improving the socio-economic wellbeing of Olokoro people.
