Arewa youths commend DSS boss for reforms, personnel welfare

Published

on

The All Northern Youth Forum has commended the Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, for reforms improved personnel welfare and strengthened intelligence-led security operations.

The forum gave the commendation in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Mr Nuhu Lere, on Sunday.

Lere described Ajayi as a “quiet architect of Nigeria’s security renaissance’’.

He said his leadership had come at a time the country was grappling with terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, separatist violence, organised crime and economic sabotage.

He said the nature of intelligence operations made it difficult for many DSS achievements to be made public.

‘’The effectiveness of the service was often reflected in attacks prevented, criminal networks disrupted and lives saved, ‘’ Lere said.

According to him, the achievements of the service that has become public demonstrate the strategic role of the DSS in protecting national security.

The general secretary also commended the DSS management for prioritising the welfare of its personnel.

He said the administration had introduced measures aimed at improving the working and living conditions of officers.

Those, he said, include medical facilities, crèche centres, residential and transit accommodation, as well as posting-related allowances.

Lere further said that families of officers who died in active service had received additional support beyond their statutory entitlements.

He said such assistance reportedly included housing, educational support for children, employment opportunities for qualified relatives and programmes to honour the sacrifices of fallen personnel.

The general secretary also praised the DSS leadership for promoting discipline, professionalism and accountability within the service.

He said personnel found culpable of corruption, misconduct or actions capable of tarnishing the image of the organisation were subjected to disciplinary procedures in line with established regulations.

Lere said the service had also demonstrated what he described as ‘’social inclusion’’ by providing opportunities for young Nigerians from disadvantaged backgrounds.

‘’This includes orphans and retired personnel have also received support, ‘’ he said.

He said the DSS had complemented conventional security operations with humanitarian interventions, including assistance to widows to establish small businesses and support for orphanages and charitable organisations.

According to him, reported interventions involving traditional and religious institutions, including support for Muslim and Christian communities, has also contributed to fostering peaceful coexistence.

He cited the reported construction of an Islamic school and a school for Christian children in Kaduna State as examples of initiatives aimed at promoting religious harmony and national unity.

On security operations, Lere said the DSS had sustained intelligence-led efforts against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, violent extremism, separatist violence, organised crime and economic sabotage across the country.

It said such operations had been recorded in the North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West and Niger-Delta, leading to the disruption of criminal networks and the arrest of suspected operatives.

He also cited operations targeting arms trafficking and crude oil theft, as well as reported efforts against Ansaru operatives in Kogi and Kwara states.

Lere specifically commended the service for operations in Kaduna State, which he said had disrupted bandit networks and led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition and other incriminating materials.

He urged Nigerians to support the DSS and other security agencies by providing credible and timely information on suspicious activities.

He also called on citizens to reject criminality and cooperate with lawful authorities, saying the sacrifices of security personnel deserved public recognition.

“Constructive criticism remains necessary in a democracy, but genuine achievements should also be recognised as part of efforts to strengthen national institutions and build a safer Nigeria,” Lere said. (NAN)

Tinubu ‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌commends Kaduna’s free CNG transit scheme

Published

on

President Bola Tinubu has commended the Kaduna State Government’s free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit scheme.

Tinubu described the initiative as an example of practical, people-centred intervention capable of reducing transportation costs for Nigerians.

The scheme, involving 100 CNG powered buses, recorded about 3.2 million passenger trips and saved commuters more than N3.5 billion in its first year.

The President made the commendation in a post on his official X account, where he made special mention of Kaduna’s intervention.

“This is more of what we need to see at the subnational level,” Tinubu stated.

The commendation came amid renewed efforts by the Federal Government and the 36 states to accelerate the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme.

The initiative is aimed at reducing transportation costs and providing relief to Nigerians affected by rising fuel and commuting expenses.

At a meeting with governors on Aug. 27, Tinubu and the state governors agreed on coordinated action to reduce transportation costs.

The governors subsequently constituted an implementation committee under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to drive the initiative.

The committee is chaired by Kwara Governor and NGF Chairman, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Working with the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles, the committee is identifying priority transport corridors and appropriate interventions.

It is also developing an operational framework for effective implementation of the programme across the states.

The Federal Government says Nigeria’s abundant gas resources provide an opportunity to reduce dependence on imported fuels and exposure to global energy shocks.

Tinubu has ruled out a return to the petrol subsidy regime, saying such a move would expose the economy to international oil price fluctuations.

He said the government would instead support states adopting CNG transportation and other interventions capable of providing measurable relief to citizens.

Reacting to the commendation, Kaduna Governor Uba Sani expressed appreciation to Tinubu for recognising the state’s intervention.

Sani reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to policies aimed at protecting vulnerable households and expanding access to essential services.

“We deeply appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for this recognition and his administration’s continued support to subnational governments,” Sani said.

The governor said Kaduna had continued to set benchmarks in education, vocational training, skills development and CNG mass transportation.

“Kaduna remains the only subnational government providing free CNG mass transit rides to its citizens,” he said.

According to him, the scheme recorded about 3.2 million passenger trips and saved commuters more than N3.5 billion during its first year.

Sani said the intervention had become one of the state government’s major measures for cushioning the effects of petrol subsidy removal.

“Our commitment remains clear: to put people first, reduce the burden on vulnerable households and ensure dividends of governance reach ordinary citizens,” he said.

The free CNG transit scheme provides fare free transportation on designated routes, benefiting workers, traders, students and other residents.

The intervention forms part of the state government’s wider investments in education, skills development, economic inclusion and human capital development.

The state government said the scheme demonstrates how targeted public interventions can reduce household expenditure and improve access to affordable transportation.

The President’s recognition also places Kaduna’s experience within the Federal Government’s broader effort to promote cheaper and cleaner domestic energy alternatives.

The Kaduna Government said it would sustain the initiative and continue implementing policies designed to deliver tangible benefits to residents.(NAN).
