JAMB releases underage UTME results, sets 320 cut-off for exceptional candidates

Published

By our reporter

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results of all underage candidates for viewing, but warned that the release does not automatically qualify them for admission into tertiary institutions.

The Board, in a statement signed by its Acting Director, Public Affairs and Protocols, Fabian Benjamin, on Saturday, explained that an underage candidate is any applicant who will be below 16 years of age as of September 30, 2026.

JAMB said the results were released mainly to enable candidates, parents and guardians to know their performance, stressing that the scores could not be used for admission or any other official purpose except by candidates who satisfy the conditions for exceptional admission.

To check their results, underage candidates are required to send “RESULT” to 55019 or 66019 using the same telephone number with which they registered for the UTME.

The Board said only candidates who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and maturity would be considered for admission, adding that the process involves several stages of assessment and verification.

Among the requirements is a minimum UTME score of 320 and at least 80 per cent in the relevant Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination subjects, where applicable.

Such candidates must also satisfy the Post-UTME requirements of their chosen institutions and undergo a final assessment by experts before they can be considered for admission.

JAMB said the stringent process was designed to separate genuinely exceptional underage candidates from those who simply performed well in the UTME.

It stated that the admission process for exceptional underage candidates was still ongoing, noting that all stages of assessment and verification had not been completed.

According to the Board, candidates awaiting their National Examinations Council results must also be given an opportunity to present their results for verification before the final assessment can be concluded.

“The Board noted that it would be unreasonable to conclude the process without allowing candidates who are awaiting their National Examinations Council (NECO) results to present and have their results verified.”

JAMB said the NECO results were yet to be released and that it would wait for their publication before proceeding to the final stage of the assessment.

“As soon as the NECO results are released, the Board will fix and announce a date for the final stage of the assessment of the exceptionally performing underage candidates,” it said.

The examination body warned parents, guardians and candidates against individuals who may attempt to exploit the process by promising to secure admission for underage candidates outside the approved procedure.

It also cautioned candidates who do not meet the requirements against presenting their viewed UTME results to institutions or individuals in an attempt to obtain admission.

JAMB stressed that participation in the UTME and the release of a candidate’s result did not guarantee admission, particularly for candidates who had not attained the prescribed admission age.

The Board assured the public that the exceptional admission exercise would remain transparent, rigorous and merit-based, in line with its commitment to protecting the integrity of the tertiary admission process.

Hardship: Public servants begin three-day warning strike

Published

By Our Reporter

Public servants across Nigeria have commenced a three-day warning strike following a directive by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council over what the workers described as worsening economic and mental hardship.

The industrial action, which began at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026, is expected to run through Sunday, October 4.

The council directed its national and state leadership to mobilise workers for the action, with the directive contained in a circular dated October 1 and signed by the National Secretary of the JNPSNC, Olowoyo Gbenga.

The circular urged the council’s leadership to ensure that the strike notice reached workers across the country.

The decision, according to the council, followed the Federal Government’s alleged failure to respond to demands earlier presented to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21, 2026.

Explaining the commencement of the industrial action, the council stated, “Consequent upon the above, the strike shall start with effect from midnight on Friday, 2nd October, 2026 to Sunday October 4th, 2026.”

The council called on public servants at the federal, state and local government levels to participate in the warning strike, saying the action was aimed at drawing attention to the economic difficulties confronting workers and their dependants.

It stated, “In the same vein, all public servants in the services of federal, state and local governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, most especially, all workers, their dependants, vulnerable and hapless Nigerians are groaning terribly under the present economic hardship.”

The JNPSNC further expressed concern over the impact of the economic situation on workers, saying, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”

It also directed its leaders to commence immediate mobilisation for the industrial action, declaring, “The time to act and mobilise workers for the three-day warning strike is now!!!”

The warning strike comes against the backdrop of demands earlier submitted by the council to the Federal Government for measures to ease the pressure of rising living costs on workers.

Among the demands were a reduction in the price of petrol, an immediate wage award for workers and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council had reportedly asked the Federal Government to bring down the pump price of petrol to N500 per litre, approve an immediate wage award and constitute a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage.

The demands followed continued concerns over the declining purchasing power of workers amid increases in the prices of essential commodities, transportation and other household needs.

In its latest circular, the council urged its members to circulate the strike notice and expressed optimism about the outcome of the industrial action.

“Please, disseminate the information!!! Surely, there is victory for us!!!” the circular added.

The council maintained that the warning strike would proceed as scheduled, with public servants across the federal, state and local government services expected to take part.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Ministry of Labour were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
