Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen will lead Nigeria’s Senior Women’s National Team, the Super Falcons, on an interim basis for their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures against Comoros in October, as the search for a substantive head coach for the team continues.

Eguavoen, who is also the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical director, will prepare the team for the qualifying match, following the sacking of former coach,Justus Madugu, following the teams disastrous outing at the just concluded  Women African Football Cup of Nations (WAFCON)

The coach according to a statement from the NFF media and communication department, brings a wealth of experience to the assignment, having managed at the highest international level, including leading Nigeria’s Super Eagles to bronze medal finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Eguavoen will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, the current head coach of Nigeria Women’s Football League side Nasarawa Amazons. Danjuma embodies vast experience with Nigeria’s women’s national teams, including leading the Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa will serve as goalkeeper trainer. Baruwa has worked with several of Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Eagles, CHAN Eagles, Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets.

Former Super Falcons defender and now coach, Ayisat Yusuf will also serve as one of the assistant coaches. Yusuf earned 68 international caps for Nigeria and represented the country at four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, three FIFA Women’s World Cups and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The 10-time African Champions will open their Olympic qualifying campaign in the second round against Comoros, with both legs scheduled for the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13, 2026, respectively. The Super Falcons received a bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams in the qualifying competition, while Comoros advanced after defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

Nigeria will navigate four rounds of two-legged knockout ties to secure one of Africa’s two available places at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. If they overcome Comoros, the Super Falcons will advance to the third round, scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027, where they will face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco.

A place in the fourth round will see Nigeria face either Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali between October 4 and 12, 2027. The final round of the qualifying race is scheduled for November 23 to December 4, 2027, with the Super Falcons potentially facing one of Guinea, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Central African Republic, Algeria or Burkina Faso

Again, Ghana part ways with Queiroz after Gambia defeat

Published

on

Barely three months after he was reinstated as coach of the Black Stars, Portuguese coach, Carlos Queiroz has parted ways with Ghana following the teams home defeat to Gambia that further deepened the Black Stars’ latest crisis.

The Ghana Football Association announced on Thursday that it had mutually agreed with the experienced Portuguese coach to terminate his contract, just a month after bringing him back for a new spell in charge.

“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” Queiroz said in a farewell message published on the association’s website.

He added that “the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end.”

Queiroz led Ghana to a devastating 4-2 home defeat against Gambia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture, despite taking a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The defeat came after the West African country had earlier suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Ivory Coast and currently sit bottom of Group C without a point from their opening two matches.

Queiroz leaves with a record of one victory, two draws and four defeats from seven games, with Ghana scoring five goals and conceding 10 during his spell.

His departure brings an end to a turbulent five-month association that began in April, when the 73-year-old signed a four-month deal to lead Ghana at the 2026 World Cup.

Queiroz guided the Black Stars into the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 2010 after defeating Panama and holding England to a draw.

Ghana’s campaign eventually ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

Although his initial contract expired after the tournament, the GFA brought him back on September 2.

Queiroz’s departure leaves the association searching for stability once again at a difficult stage of the qualifying campaign.

Ghana are already six points behind Ivory Coast and Gambia after two matches, and with only the top two teams in each four-team group securing qualification, the Black Stars face a difficult task to avoid missing a second consecutive Africa Cup of Nations.
