2027: North must reciprocate Tinubu’s support for Buhari, says Yari

Published

As political parties commence campaigns for the 2027 general election, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC),   Senator Abdulaziz Yari, has stated that northern region has no reason not to support the re election bid of President Bola Tinubu

Yari, a former governor of Zamfara state who currently represents Zamfara west senatorial district, made the declaration when he led members of the PCC to the palace of Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, as part of the council’s engagements ahead of the 2027 elections.

The PCC chairman who noted that Tinubu gave total  support to former President Muhammadu Buhari during his presidential bid and subsequent re-election., said this is the time for the north to reciprocate the gesture

He said Tinubu had resisted pressure to contest the 2019 presidential election against Buhari, arguing that it was the turn of the north to produce the president.

“For us in the north, I think it is time for us to pay Tinubu back for allowing the north to complete its full term,” Yari said.

“I remember there was a struggle by some power-mongering bloc within the APC that tried to convince Tinubu to contest the presidential election in 2019. He resisted the pressure and said it was the turn of the north.

“Tinubu said as long as Buhari can come out and ask people to vote for him, he would be with Buhari till the end. And that was what Tinubu truly did.”

Yari, who currently represents Zamfara West in the Senate, said the support Tinubu offered Buhari provided a basis for northerners to reciprocate by backing the incumbent president in 2027.

He said the region should support Tinubu’s re-election bid based on what he described as the president’s performance and his administration’s efforts to address challenges inherited from previous governments.

“Today, I don’t think there is an excuse for us from the northern region not to support Tinubu to continue the good job he started and complete his tenure,” he said.

“The message from northern Nigeria, where I came from, is that there is nothing to worry about. There are still people of high calibre and character who believe in justice and fairness. We are going to do our best to ensure that Tinubu’s journey continues to the end. He can count on us.”

Yari also said Tinubu had undertaken significant restructuring of the country despite inheriting what he described as a challenging situation from previous administrations.

The APC campaign council director-general said its push for Tinubu’s re-election was not based solely on the principle of power rotation.

He said the council was backing the president because it believed Nigerians wanted him to remain in office and continue with his administration’s policies

NAF aircraft crash: ADC demands probe of N4.5billion defence maintenance budget

Published

By Tony Chuddy

The opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has blamed poor implementation  and utilisation of the N4.4 billion defence maintenance before dget to the series of military plane crashes that have taken the live of several young Nigerian officers

The party ina statement by it’s National Publicly Secretary, Bolaji Abdullah, expressed sadness over Monday’s crash of a Nigerian Air Force (ATR-42) aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

The party therefore called for an audit of the “non-implementation of defence budgets needed for the regular maintenance of aircraft in service with the Nigerian Air Force.”

The ADC said the incident, which he described as “tragic and unfortunate”, highlights the poor funding of defence budgets in the country.

“While we do not intend to prejudice ongoing investigations into the cause of this tragic crash, we believe that this sad moment also provides an opportunity to raise, yet again, questions about the non-implementation of the defence budget and the perennial neglect of military equipment,” the statement read.

The opposition party recalled that the federal government had in 2025,  released the sum of N4.5 billion, representing only about 13.98 per cent of the N34.71 billion budgeted for the maintenance of Nigerian Air Force aircraft.

The statement noted that the released sum, “stood in sharp contrast to the N20.74 billion allocated for the maintenance of the Presidential Air Fleet, of which N20.27 billion had been released over the same period, representing 97.76 per cent.

“Put simply, while the fleet that serves a handful of people in power got almost every kobo it asked for, the fleet that serves and protects 200 million Nigerians was left with crumbs,” ADC said.

While insisting that the safety of the President matters, ADC said what also matters is the safety of the pilots and airmen who put their lives on the line in defence of the country.

“Patriotism does not replace spare parts, and condolence messages do not take the place of accountability,” the party added.

The party therefore demanded investigations into the cause of the crash and a thorough probe of the maintenance of defence equipment, especially the Nigerian Air Force fleet.
