Our Reporter
Former member of the House of representatives for Buruku Federal Constituency at the lower Chambers of the national assembly from Benue State, Engr Kpam Jimin Sokpo, has expressed the hope that Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with Pete Obi as presidential candidate will spring surprise in the next year’s general election, crushing to victory.
He held that given the caliber of politicians in the party, winning at the states including Benue with Professor Terhemba Shija as governorship candidate will be what he described as easy task in 2027.
Engr Sokpo who is the candidate for House of Representatives for Buruku Federal Constituency, stated that the power of incumbency in the country have been fractured with an incumbent present, governors and senators loosing at the polls.
“As a democrat, I believe election ultimately are the will of the people. If Benue people with the level of anger, societal decay and ongoing killings stand up and say they want a paradigm shift, I don’t think a sitting governor with security apparatus and other machineries will do nothing but to obey the will of the people”, Sokpo stated.
The national assembly hopeful, added that NDC is taking the messages to the grassroots to see that the party is the credible alternative, noting that they can’t shy away that someone is in power, saying people are the owners of government and can revolt with their votes and cast them out if such occupants fail to deliver in governance.
Dismissing insinuation in some quarters that NDC is new in Benue with relative structures, Engr Sokpo state that himself and the governorship candidate, Prof Shija is a household name when it comes to politics, pointing out that people are the structures with their votes.
“We have the political force to withstand any other political party in Benue State. You can see the crop of candidates and followers. It is my hope that NDC will turn in a positive results in the forthcoming general election both at the national and state levels”, he declared.
According to him, having contested for same seat in 2023 general election but lost, have learnt from the loopholes, saying his tract records of constituency projects posted across Buruku communities will speak for him at the polls in 2027.
The former federal lawmaker, therefore, called on Benue electorates to shun the All Progressives Congress with it gimmicks of lip service and vote for a change for NDC to deliver practical dividends of democracy to them.
It will be recalled that the state chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, unveiled its governorship, Senate and State House of assembly candidates at the ceremony held along Oturkpo road Makurdi, the state capital.
Presenting the candidates, the State chairman of the party, Hon. Ojegbe Oinu, said NDC has fielded candidates for all elective positions ahead of the 2027 general election in the State and decried wanton killings in different communities without government intervention.
“NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi was not spared while on a solidarity visit in Benue state. This party is on a rescue mission to deliver Benue out of the shackle of insecurity, evil, infrastructural decay. Let me call on Benue people to vote for NDC candidates in 2027”, he appealed.
Responding, Professor Shija thanked the leadership of the party and the state for making the event a success, assuring that he will correct the governor Alia’s misdeed for a single term in office and work for Benue South to have a shot at Government House in 3021 and call for cooperation.

Famous Nollywood actor, Francis Duru, is dead

By Our Reporter
Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, his family has announced.
The family disclosed his death in a statement published on the actor’s official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the post reads.
“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
Duru’s death comes months after he dismissed reports circulating on social media that he was battling a life-threatening illness.
The rumours intensified in June after a video showing the actor looking frail went viral, prompting concerns among fans and colleagues in the entertainment industry.
Responding to the speculation at the time, Duru released a video on Instagram in which he described the footage as “fabricated and malicious”.
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru completed his primary and secondary education in the Central African country before moving to Nigeria for university education.
He gained admission to the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.
Duru began his acting career in 1989 when he featured in Missing Mark, a film directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. However, the role did not immediately establish him as a prominent figure in the Nigerian movie industry.
His breakthrough came in 1995 following his appearance in Rattlesnake, an action-comedy produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe. In the film, he played the character Ahanna, a role that helped raise his profile in Nollywood.
Throughout his career, Duru earned several awards and honours in recognition of his contributions to the entertainment industry.
He was named a United Nations ambassador of peace for his positive influence on young people.
In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
Beyond his acting career, Duru was married to Adokiye, whom he wed in 2003. Their union produced four children.
The family suffered a major loss in August 2024 when one of their children, Ifeanyi, died.
Duru’s death marks the loss of an actor whose career spanned several decades in Nigeria’s film industry.
