Do not announce result not collated by INEC, Amupitan warns media
By Eze Nnadi
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has warned media organisations to desist from announcing result collated from sources outside the commission
INEC chairman, Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, warned that declaring privately collated results in the 2027 polls could add to the already expected tension in the elections
Amupitan gave the warning on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking at a national stakeholders’ meeting convened to mark 100 days to the 2027 general election.
The INEC chairman’s came an d claims by the two major opposition political parties, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Africa Democratic Congress (ADC), that they would set up parallel election results transmission portals
NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi said he would not rely solely on the INEC for the electronics transmission of the 2027 general election results, citing the 2024 alleged glitch that marred the exercise
Obi therefore stated that his team will set up a separate electronic review portal, where all the election results will be transmitted electronically for his supporters to view as they are being collated
Amupitan argued that the electoral act, gave only INEC the exclusive right and authority to declare results if the election, as he urged the media to ignore any result that did not come from the commission
“The third is partnership with you in the media. I repeat the charge I gave to the members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors recently in Abuja
“Establish fact-checking desks and use digital forensic tools in verifying your information. Verify with INEC before you publish.
“Resist the declaration of privately collated results, because under the Electoral Act, the authority to declare results rests exclusively with the Commission in national elections, it is far more important to be right than to be to be forced,” he said.
The INEC chairman who regretted that the problem of election result collation has created a major gap in the electoral process, said the issue has remained recurrent, judging from previous election.
“I always tell my commissioners that some people have worked hard to get INEC to where it is today, and we should work harder.
“They handed over INEC to us. We should work harder to hand over a better INEC to those that will come after us. So, one area I have identified as a major gap is the issue of collation of election results. The problem is actually not with the voting at the polling units.
“So that is why we have introduced a safeguard that will help us to solve every problem, reconcile every issue at the polling unit, so that collation will be seamless. And that is being handled,” he said.

NAF aircraft crash: ADC demands probe of N4.5billion defence maintenance budget
By Tony Chuddy
The opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has blamed poor implementation and utilisation of the N4.4 billion defence maintenance before dget to the series of military plane crashes that have taken the live of several young Nigerian officers
The party ina statement by it’s National Publicly Secretary, Bolaji Abdullah, expressed sadness over Monday’s crash of a Nigerian Air Force (ATR-42) aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
The party therefore called for an audit of the “non-implementation of defence budgets needed for the regular maintenance of aircraft in service with the Nigerian Air Force.”
The ADC said the incident, which he described as “tragic and unfortunate”, highlights the poor funding of defence budgets in the country.
“While we do not intend to prejudice ongoing investigations into the cause of this tragic crash, we believe that this sad moment also provides an opportunity to raise, yet again, questions about the non-implementation of the defence budget and the perennial neglect of military equipment,” the statement read.
The opposition party recalled that the federal government had in 2025, released the sum of N4.5 billion, representing only about 13.98 per cent of the N34.71 billion budgeted for the maintenance of Nigerian Air Force aircraft.
The statement noted that the released sum, “stood in sharp contrast to the N20.74 billion allocated for the maintenance of the Presidential Air Fleet, of which N20.27 billion had been released over the same period, representing 97.76 per cent.
“Put simply, while the fleet that serves a handful of people in power got almost every kobo it asked for, the fleet that serves and protects 200 million Nigerians was left with crumbs,” ADC said.
While insisting that the safety of the President matters, ADC said what also matters is the safety of the pilots and airmen who put their lives on the line in defence of the country.
“Patriotism does not replace spare parts, and condolence messages do not take the place of accountability,” the party added.
The party therefore demanded investigations into the cause of the crash and a thorough probe of the maintenance of defence equipment, especially the Nigerian Air Force fleet.
