Suspected bandits have allegedly kidnapped 18 students from Oyo State travelling from Sokoto State to their hometowns in Oke-Ogun, after attacking their chartered bus and killing the driver, sources familiar with the incident have said.

The students, who were travelling from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, were reportedly intercepted by the assailants along the route to Oyo State within the past 48 hours.

The abductors were said to have moved the victims towards the Mokwa axis.

The development has raised fresh concerns over the safety of students travelling between states, particularly along routes where commuters have repeatedly faced attacks and abductions.

An Oke-Ogun youth leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, clarifying that the victims were students of Gamji College of Health Technology and not Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, as earlier reported.

“Sadly, the unfortunate incident is being confirmed by me because I’m from Oke-Ogun too, and our people have confirmed that it truly happened in the past 48 hours,” the youth leader said.

He explained that the students were travelling in a chartered bus from their institution in Sokoto to Oke-Ogun, with Igboho as their specific destination.

“But it wasn’t a bus conveying UDUS students. It was a bus taking students from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, to Oke-Ogun, Igboho to be precise,” he said.

According to him, the attackers killed the driver before taking the students away.

“The driver was killed and all the students were kidnapped. They have reached the Mokwa side,” he said.

The youth leader further disclosed that the driver’s remains had been buried.

“The driver was killed at the scene and his remains were buried on Saturday,” he said.

Other sources familiar with the incident said the number of abducted students could be as many as 18.

The sources said the students were travelling in a chartered bus arranged by their school to convey them to their respective hometowns in Oyo State when the vehicle was intercepted by the assailants.

They were reportedly taken away by the attackers after the driver was killed.

The latest incident comes barely days after 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members were reportedly abducted by gunmen in Imo State.

The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when gunmen reportedly attacked their two buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

Efforts to obtain further information from the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, proved abortive, as he had not responded to messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

By Our Reporter with agency report

A 46-year-old businessman and owner of Esther Estate in Ondo State, Kayode Akinbolusere, popularly known as Tolufe, has died in a suspected suicide at his office in Igba town.

Akinbolusere reportedly died on Thursday, October 29, after allegedly ingesting a poisonous substance believed to be Sniper insecticide.

Before his death, the businessman reportedly recorded a video in which he spoke about his personal struggles and announced his decision to bequeath his properties to his wife, Esther, and their three children, who are based in Canada.

In the video, he said the decision was entirely his, explaining that nobody pressured him into making the will. He also acknowledged his wife’s support and sacrifices throughout his entrepreneurial journey.

He said: “I am doing this video on behalf of my family. I, Akinbolusere Kayode, am doing my will on my properties. I am doing this on my own; nobody put pressure on me. I woke up and left for work, leaving my family at home.

“The first and second machines I was using at work developed a fault. I was imagining what was happening. When I started my business, I started from scratch and was very transparent about it.

“My wife knew how I suffered. She didn’t trouble me. I will all my properties to my wife, Akinbolusere Esther, who hails from Ekiti, and my three children who are in Canada.

“My (wife) stood by me when I had nothing and never for once wronged me. She was very supportive when I had nothing, especially when I was working as a barber. I was the one who destroyed everything with carelessness,” Kayode stated.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command said it had commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the businessman’s death.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Friday.

According to the statement, the deceased, who lived at Road 7, Housing Estate, Igba, was found dead in his office beside BOVAS Petrol Station in Igba town at about 3pm on Thursday.

The statement read, “The Ondo State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Felix Ohagwu, has commenced an investigation into the suspected suicide of a 46-year-old man, identified as Akinbolusere Kayode, popularly known as Tolufe, who reportedly died in his office in Igba Town, Ondo State, on Thursday, 29th October 2026.

“The incident was reported following information received from members of the public that the deceased, a resident of Road 7, Housing Estate, Igba, had died in his office located beside BOVAS Petrol Station, Igba Town, at about 1500hrs on the said date.

“Upon receipt of the information, police operatives attached to Bolorunduro Division visited the scene, where two empty bottles suspected to have contained Sniper insecticide were recovered from nearby bush.

“Preliminary findings also revealed that the deceased had allegedly recorded a video before his death, which has since circulated on social media, in which he reportedly lamented about his life struggles.

“His remains were subsequently evacuated and deposited at the State Hospital Morgue for preservation and further examination. No foul play or visible marks of violence were observed on his body at the time of examination.”

The police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, had directed a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine the actual cause of death.

The commissioner also appealed to members of the public to avoid speculation while investigations were ongoing.

He further encouraged people facing emotional distress, marital difficulties or other personal challenges to seek appropriate support and assistance rather than take actions that could put their lives at risk.

A young woman, identified as Umuora Mmesoma, has reportedly been killed by her former boyfriend in Uga, Aguata: Local Government Area of Anambra State, after she allegedly ended their relationship.

Mmesoma was said to have gone missing on Friday, October 16, 2026, before her body was reportedly discovered.

According to accounts circulating on social media, the suspect, identified as Chima, allegedly confessed to killing the young woman because she broke up with him.

In a statement attributed to him in a circulating video, the suspect said he killed Mmesoma in his house in Uga, put her body in a bag and dumped it at an undisclosed location.

The incident has once more raised concerns over violence against women and the dangers associated with abusive relationships.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police command was yet to issue a statement about the development at the time of filing this report.

However, it was learnt that the suspect has been handed over to the police in the state.

Reacting to the ugly incident, a former Special Adviser on General Duties to the Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Dr. Uche Nworah, said no disagreement, rejection or heartbreak justifies taking another person’s life.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Nworah wrote: “It is tragic that a young woman should lose her life for exercising her right to walk away from a relationship she no longer wished to continue.

“Love should never become a death sentence. No disagreement, rejection or heartbreak justifies taking another person’s life.

“I am relieved that the suspect has reportedly been apprehended, although his arrest can never bring back the precious life that has been lost.”
