Oyedeji rejects NBBF election outcome
Former D’Tigers captain, Olumide Oyedeji has described lady week’s election into the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (No BBF), as a scam that must not be accepted by stakeholders
The former NBBF board member therefore vowed to seek justice over the outcome of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Elective Congress in Abuja, claiming irregularities in the process and describing it as a “selection” rather than a credible election.
He contested for a South-West representative position and the President at the congress held at the ICC Centre in Abuja on Thursday,, but said his name was initially omitted from the list of candidates and was only included on the ballot after he protested on the floor.
Although he acknowledged his eventual defeat, the former Nigerian international questioned the fairness and transparency of the process, insisting that candidates should be given equal opportunities to contest.
“I am not saying there was no election, but there was a selection.
“Everything I said before the election played out. You can go back and review my statements before the election. Everything I predicted happened.”
He stated that his name was excluded from the list of South-West candidates while those of other aspirants, including Mustapha and Ugo, were included.
He also claimed that some presidential aspirants and candidates from other zones, including the North-Central, experienced similar omissions.
Oyedeji said he had to challenge the omission at the last minute before his name was eventually added to the ballot.
“Yes, I eventually lost, but I believe the outcome had already been predetermined,” he added.
The President of the Nigerian Olympians Association and Chairman of the Nigerian Athletes Commission warned that allowing such irregularities to go unchallenged could have wider implications for sports administration in Nigeria.
According to him, the issue goes beyond his personal ambition, stressing that other athletes and former internationals could face similar challenges if adequate safeguards are not put in place.
“If this could happen to me, it could happen to many other Nigerian athletes, former internationals and people who do not have a strong voice,” he said.
Oyedeji maintained that his primary concern was not winning the election but ensuring that the process was conducted in accordance with established procedures.
“All I wanted was justice. If I lose, I lose. I do not have to win. But the process must be fair, transparent and properly conducted. The right procedures must be followed, and the outcome must be declared with integrity,” he stated.
He vowed to pursue the matter beyond his public criticism of the congress, insisting that the irregularities raised serious questions about integrity in the administration of Nigerian basketball.
continue to pursue it. This is not integrity,” Oyedeji declared.
Beyond the election controversy, the former basketball star defended the importance of experience and professional competence in sports administration, arguing that former athletes could make significant contributions to the development of sports when equipped with the necessary management skills.

FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos record 2-0 win over Puerto Rico
Nigeria’s U-17 Women National Team, the Flamingos, kept their campaign at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on track with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico in their Group B encounter on Tuesday night in Rabat.
The 2022 World Cup bronze-medallists started the game with real intent, pressing high and creating early problems for the Puerto Rican defence. It was a lively opening from both sides, but the Flamingos soon took control with their quick movement and direct play going forward.
The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when in-form striker Oluwakemi Adegbuyi finished brilliantly from Queen Joseph’s assist to put Nigeria 1-0 up. That goal settled the Nigerian girls and gave them the confidence to dominate possession for most of the first half.
In the second period, the Flamingos continued to push for another goal. Queen Joseph, Tosin Rafiu and Favour Nkwocha all came close, while Puerto Rico also tried to find a way back into the game with a couple of changes. Coach Hakeem Busari responded by introducing Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku in the 67th minute to add more energy and bite in attack.
The pressure finally paid off in the 90th minute when Nigeria got the second goal as substitute Precious Oscar nodded home a cross from Kemi Adegbuyi to seal the contest at 2-0. The team showed great maturity to see out six minutes of added time and secure all three points. The victory is a big boost for the Flamingos as North Korea defeated Poland 6-1 in the other match of Group B. The high-score deficit against the Poles is an advantage to the Flamingos ahead of Friday’s Group B encounter against the Koreans.
