The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned manufacturers, importers, distributors and dealers of SIM-enabled devices that phones and other devices that fail to meet its regulatory requirements may be restricted from accessing Nigerian mobile telecommunications networks.

The Commission said it was strengthening monitoring and enforcement of existing Type Approval and device verification rules through technology-enabled processes to ensure that devices imported, distributed and sold in Nigeria meet applicable standards.

In a statement signed by the NCC Director of Public Affairs, Nnenna Ukoha, the requirements are backed by the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, the Type Approval Regulations 2024 and the Type Approval Business Rules 2024.

The Commission reminded Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Original Device Manufacturers (ODMs), importers, distributors, dealers and retailers that all device models intended for importation, assembly, distribution or sale in Nigeria must obtain the required NCC Type Approval.

It also directed manufacturers and responsible suppliers to ensure that the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) information of individual devices is submitted through the approved compliance process for verification before sale and distribution.

The NCC urged dealers and retailers to review devices already in their stock to confirm compliance with the applicable approval and verification requirements, while working with suppliers to resolve any outstanding issues.

It further stressed that newly imported devices must satisfy the relevant requirements before being introduced into the Nigerian market.

The Commission said the automated Type Approval Compliance process would strengthen oversight of devices entering the country and improve its capacity to identify irregularities in their importation and distribution.

The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service to support the reconciliation of import records, compliance with applicable duties and fair competition among businesses operating in the communications device market.

According to the Commission, the framework is also intended to prevent businesses that comply with regulatory obligations from being disadvantaged by those that fail to meet the requirements.

The NCC said devices that do not satisfy the applicable rules may be restricted from accessing Nigerian mobile telecommunications networks upon full implementation of the approved enforcement framework.

The Commission encouraged businesses that had not participated in its stakeholder engagements, or were uncertain about the compliance process, to seek guidance through its approved onboarding and support channels.

It reaffirmed its commitment to working with industry stakeholders to facilitate compliance, protect consumers and promote a fair and sustainable market for communications devices.

Manufacturers, importers, distributors and dealers seeking further information were advised to visit www.ncc.gov.ng/DeviceCheckerGuide or call 315 for assistance.

The national chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has said six years after the #EndSARS protest, Nigeria has failed to learn lessons from the event.

Baba-Ahmed, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, said the issues that forced young Nigerians to the streets in 2020 are still present.

He said the disbandment of SARS was not enough as police brutality, lack of accountability and bad governance have continued.

According to him, the judicial panels set up after the protest raised hope but their recommendations were not fully implemented.

He said the fact that police still fired tear gas at youths marking the 6th anniversary at Lekki Toll Gate today shows that nothing has changed.

“We have not shown our young people that protesting for good governance is not a crime. Until justice is served for those who died at Lekki and compensation is paid, the wound will remain,” he said.

Group accuses Edo govt of political vendetta over arrest, arraignment of nonagenarian

Our Reporter

The Peoples’ Assembly for Good Governance (PAGG) has condemned what it described as intimidation of the opposition by the Edo State Government using state apparatus.

The condemnation followed the arraignment of the father of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Edo South Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, Hon.Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, over alleged trumped-up charges.

It will be recalled that the 90-year-old, Pa Joseph Iduoriyekemwen, was arrested by armed policemen from the Edo State Police Command at about 4 a.m. from his residence in Amagba, a suburb of Benin City, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

The nonagenarian was arraigned alongside three others at the Edo State Special Criminal Court on Monday, October 19, 2026, on allegations of cultism, conspiracy, attempted murder and land dispute. They were admitted to bail in the sum of ₦1 million each.

Reacting to the development, PAGG, in a statement jointly signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Samson Isibor, and National Secretary, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nkama, described the arrest and arraignment as an attempt to muzzle the opposition ahead of the elections.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the arrest and arraignment of Pa Iduoriyekemwen over alleged cultism, attempted murder and other false charges by policemen who invaded his residence in commando style, at a time when he was supposed to be enjoying his sleep.

“How could they allege that a 90-year-old great-grandfather is a cultist? How on earth could they have charged him to a Special Court that is not known to our Constitution?

“The arraignment by the police is nothing but the hand of Esau and the voice of Jacob. We make bold to say that the real target of the whole incident is the ADC senatorial candidate, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, with the

” the group said.

The Group warned that no amount of intimidation and victimization will suppress the voice of opposition in the state, adding that the people are ready to do the needful.

“This present government in Edo state is very intolerant to the opposition, whereas opposition in whatever form is the beauty of democracy.

“Let it be known that the good people of Edo can see the deceit of the current government and the pain it is inflicting on them. They know what to do and are ready to vote out bad governance, come 2027”, it added.

“We, therefore, call on Governor Monday Okpebholo to order the immediate withdrawal of the case against Pa Iduoriyemkewen in the interest of peace, remembering that Hon Iduoriyekme has served this state meritorious,” Isibor posited.
