Reps C’ttee seeks stronger oversight as Education minister reports 250,000 TVET trainees
Musa Abdul
The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education has called for stronger collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education to strengthen oversight of the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme.
The committee made the call Tuesday during a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, in Abuja, where he disclosed that more than 250,000 Nigerians were undergoing skills training at about 1,200 centres nationwide.
Chairman of the committee, Rep. Fuad Kayode Laguda said the meeting followed six unanswered letters sent to the ministry between January 2025 and July 2026 seeking information on the programme’s implementation and progress.
Laguda expressed concern that the ministry had also failed to attend an earlier meeting scheduled for July, prompting the committee to summon the minister in July and issue a final summons in August over its inability to obtain the requested information.
“We wrote six different correspondences on the same subject matter, requesting status reports on TVET’s activities and programmes. We did not get any response from your ministry,” he said.
Alausa in his response apologised to the lawmakers, explaining that he had not personally received the correspondence and attributing the communication breakdown to the transfer of the desk officer responsible for receiving letters from the National Assembly.
“I would have to profusely apologise and let you know that I did not get any of the correspondence that you sent,” he said.
Following an executive session with the minister and ministry officials, Laguda described the engagement as productive, assuring that the committee would sustain its interaction with the ministry to improve accountability and implementation of the programme.
“Our meeting was progressive and purposeful. We are satisfied and, like I said, we will be moving forward and having better engagements,” the chairman said, stressing that adequate information was necessary for effective legislative oversight.
Alausa said the administration of President Bola Tinubu had revived technical and vocational education, describing it as a critical strategy for tackling unemployment and addressing Nigeria’s shortage of skilled manpower.
“Before this president came in, technical and vocational education was almost totally dissipated in our country. But I can tell you, in a short three years, we’ve brought that back,” he said.
The minister disclosed that each trainee receives a monthly stipend of N30,000, while participating training centres receive N50,000 per student monthly to support practical instruction, equipment acquisition, facility improvement and the engagement of qualified instructors.
He said the ministry had streamlined the programme’s trades from nearly 60 to about 22 priority areas, including fashion design, solar photovoltaic installation, electrical installation and plumbing, adding that the initiative attracted about 1.3 million applicants in its first enrolment exercise and nearly 1.4 million in the second.
Alausa explained that admissions were limited by available funding and the capacity of training centres, while a job portal had been developed to connect beneficiaries with employers. He added that collaboration with the Bank of Industry would support trainees interested in establishing businesses.
“We don’t just want them to be job seekers. We want them to be micro-entrepreneurs and do business themselves,” he said.
The minister further disclosed that technical education had been made free in federal technical colleges and one selected state technical college in each state, while partnerships with institutions in Singapore were strengthening instructors’ capacity.
He said the government was pursuing a private sector-led TVET system, with the committee expected to continue monitoring implementation, funding and the programme’s impact on employment and economic development.

ENDSARS: Six years after, we failed to learn our lessons, Baba-Ahmed blasts FG

The national chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has said six years after the #EndSARS protest, Nigeria has failed to learn lessons from the event.
Baba-Ahmed, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, said the issues that forced young Nigerians to the streets in 2020 are still present.
He said the disbandment of SARS was not enough as police brutality, lack of accountability and bad governance have continued.
According to him, the judicial panels set up after the protest raised hope but their recommendations were not fully implemented.
He said the fact that police still fired tear gas at youths marking the 6th anniversary at Lekki Toll Gate today shows that nothing has changed.
“We have not shown our young people that protesting for good governance is not a crime. Until justice is served for those who died at Lekki and compensation is paid, the wound will remain,” he said.

The EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, confirmed his arrest to our correspondent when contacted on Tuesday.
However, sources said he was accused of advance fee fraud, criminal breach of trust, criminal conversion, obtaining money under false pretences, theft and money laundering.
“Ezuma allegedly obtained the dollars from the Ukrainian investor between 2007 and 2015 for mineral exploration and power projects that were never delivered.

Group accuses Edo govt of political vendetta over arrest, arraignment of nonagenarian
Our Reporter
The Peoples’ Assembly for Good Governance (PAGG) has condemned what it described as intimidation of the opposition by the Edo State Government using state apparatus.
The condemnation followed the arraignment of the father of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Edo South Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, Hon.Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, over alleged trumped-up charges.
It will be recalled that the 90-year-old, Pa Joseph Iduoriyekemwen, was arrested by armed policemen from the Edo State Police Command at about 4 a.m. from his residence in Amagba, a suburb of Benin City, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
The nonagenarian was arraigned alongside three others at the Edo State Special Criminal Court on Monday, October 19, 2026, on allegations of cultism, conspiracy, attempted murder and land dispute. They were admitted to bail in the sum of ₦1 million each.
Reacting to the development, PAGG, in a statement jointly signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Samson Isibor, and National Secretary, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nkama, described the arrest and arraignment as an attempt to muzzle the opposition ahead of the elections.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the arrest and arraignment of Pa Iduoriyekemwen over alleged cultism, attempted murder and other false charges by policemen who invaded his residence in commando style, at a time when he was supposed to be enjoying his sleep.
“How could they allege that a 90-year-old great-grandfather is a cultist? How on earth could they have charged him to a Special Court that is not known to our Constitution?
“The arraignment by the police is nothing but the hand of Esau and the voice of Jacob. We make bold to say that the real target of the whole incident is the ADC senatorial candidate, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, with the
” the group said.
The Group warned that no amount of intimidation and victimization will suppress the voice of opposition in the state, adding that the people are ready to do the needful.
“This present government in Edo state is very intolerant to the opposition, whereas opposition in whatever form is the beauty of democracy.
“Let it be known that the good people of Edo can see the deceit of the current government and the pain it is inflicting on them. They know what to do and are ready to vote out bad governance, come 2027”, it added.
“We, therefore, call on Governor Monday Okpebholo to order the immediate withdrawal of the case against Pa Iduoriyemkewen in the interest of peace, remembering that Hon Iduoriyekme has served this state meritorious,” Isibor posited.
