Governor Bala Mohammed on Tuesday commissioned solar-powered infrastructure and upgraded accommodation facilities at the Yankari Game Reserve, a move the state government says will reposition tourism as a key driver of Bauchi’s economic diversification.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mohammed said the projects were designed to unlock the economic potential of Yankari, improve visitor experience, create jobs for youth, and support local businesses.

“For too long the full economic potential of the reserve had not been harnessed. Our administration believes that tourism must be treated not merely as a recreational activity but as a serious component of our economic development strategy,” the governor stated.

Represented by the deputy Governor of the state, Rt. Honourable Auwal Muhammad Jatau, the governor noted that the projects commissioned include modern solar electrification infrastructure costing N2,693,394,930 to power the resort, accommodation areas, pathways and other facilities.

He explained that the solar system will provide cleaner and more reliable electricity while reducing dependence on conventional power and lowering the resort’s environmental footprint.

Other projects include upgraded chalets and executive accommodations renovated to meet modern hospitality standards at a cost of N166,001,558, and improved water supply and recirculation facilities costing N110,000,000.

Mohammed said the goal is to create a more competitive tourism environment that encourages longer visitor stays and increases internally generated revenue.

He outlined a model where government provides infrastructure and security, while the private sector, communities and development partners drive investment.

“Yankari has the potential to become a major anchor for this strategy. With improved infrastructure, stronger security, better hospitality services, effective marketing, and greater private sector participation, we can attract more domestic and international visitors,” he said.

Yankari Game Reserve remains one of Nigeria’s foremost wildlife and ecotourism destinations, known for its wildlife, warm springs and ecological heritage.
