ADC knocks Tinubu, APC for appropriating state institutions, queries Lagos CP presence at City Boys event

Published

Tella Emeh

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Tinubu administration of appropriating state institutions to advance the President’s 2027 political agenda, thereby erasing the boundaries between state institutions and party politics.

The party  said  that reports of INEC contracting a long-standing political henchman of the President for election logistics,  as well as the appearance of Lagos State Commissioner of Police at the launch of the pro-Tinubu City Boy Movement, demonstrate a cynical disregard for public sensitivity and a dangerous pattern whereby partisan actors are being positioned to handle sensitive election materials while a head of state institutions that are required to be neutral are brazenly co-opted into partisan politics.

In a statement issued on Thursday, by the ADC National Publicity, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party warned that the developments raise serious questions about the neutrality of Nigeria’s electoral and security institutions ahead of the 2027 elections and demanded immediate explanations from both INEC and the Nigeria Police Force.

The ADC said it became  compelling  to raise the alarm over a dangerous development that is becoming impossible to ignore under the Tinubu administration: there are no longer any discernible boundaries between the Nigerian state and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the party, political actors are openly infiltrating state institutions, while head of security units who should statutorily maintain neutrality are  shamelessly turning into political cheer leaders of the ruling party and the President.

“While this has increasingly gone worse as the 2027 election approaches, perhaps nothing illustrates the absurdity more clearly than a serving Commissioner of Police appearing at the launch of the so-called “City Boy Movement”  and reports that a faction of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), led by a notoriously well-known henchman of President Tinubu is being engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transport election personnel and sensitive materials.

“INEC’s credibility depends not only on conducting free and fair elections, but on inspiring confidence among all political stakeholders. Any logistics arrangement that potentially undermines the integrity of the electoral process because of the involvement of partisan individuals in handling sensitive materials would certainly cast a long shadow of doubts on whether the process has been manipulated.

“On the basis of this reported engagement alone, it is pertinent to suspect that something sinister is afoot. Especially, when only a few days ago, the President declared before visiting religious leaders that “all is fair in war.” This statement by the President betrays a desperate state of mind of someone who would do anything to advantage himself,  even if it means hijacking election materials.

“Equally troubling is the participation of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police at the launch of a political movement established to advance President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election. The Nigeria Police Force belongs to the Nigerian people, not to any political party. Senior police officers must not only remain impartial, they must also be seen to be impartial.”

Calling on the INEC to clarify the nature of its engagement with the faction of NURTW associated with one of the contestants in the election, even if the contestant is the President, the ADC said “our electoral process cannot be used for political patronage. As the leading  opposition party,  we will not accept any dealings by the INEC that is likely undermine the integrity of the elections. In addition to this statement,  we will be writing to the Chairman of INEC to demand clear explanation of this incestuous engagement.

It also called on the Inspector-General of Police to explain whether the attendance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police at the City Boy Movement event was officially authorised and whether such conduct is consistent with the political neutrality expected of senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

“We also demand that the Inspector-General of Police should either take decisive disciplinary action against this Lagos State Commissioner of Police, if he did not authorise his attendance at the event, or he should issue to him a blanket approval to accept invitations and attend political activities of other political parties as well.

“For a start, the ADC hereby  invites  the Inspector-General of Police and the FCT Commissioner of Police to our upcoming event in Abuja, details of which will be respectfully communicated to them soon. In the interest of fairness and equity, we fervently expect them to attend,” the statement read.

Lakurawa terrorist group kills 4 soldiers in deadly Sokoto attack

By Mohammadu Ahmad

At least four soldiers are feared dead following an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbe, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on Friday.

The attackers, reportedly numbering more than 300, stormed the town on motorcycles and engaged troops in a fierce gun battle before allegedly attacking shops, vehicles and a hospital.

The heavily armed group was said to have arrived in Kebbe at about 10am, prompting soldiers deployed at a military base on the outskirts of the town to engage them.

A security expert in the state, Bashar Altine, who confirmed the incident, said four soldiers were feared to have died during the confrontation.

However, the reported casualty figure could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.

The spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, also confirmed that an attack occurred but said the command was still working to establish the details.

Rufai said he could not confirm reports of casualties, including the alleged deaths of the four soldiers.

Attempts to obtain confirmation from the spokesman of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, were unsuccessful, as he had yet to respond to a message sent to him as of press time.

Altine said the attackers moved into the heart of Kebbe after the confrontation with the troops, particularly the Sabon Gari area, where they allegedly broke into shops and stole large quantities of mobile phones and bread.

He said the militants also attacked a military vehicle equipped with a mounted rocket-propelled grenade, damaging three tyres and breaking its windscreen.

The attackers reportedly proceeded to the General Hospital, Kebbe, where they allegedly smashed the windows of vehicles parked within the hospital premises, including the vehicle of the Divisional Police Officer and an ambulance.

“They also seized mobile phones belonging to patients at the hospital,” Altine added.

He further alleged that the terrorists took four motorcycles belonging to residents before beginning their withdrawal from the town.

According to Altine, the attackers eventually left Kebbe in the evening through the direction of the police station and proceeded towards communities west of the town.

“Reports from villages west of Kebbe indicate that they entered Ungushi town, one of the districts in Kebbe Local Government Area,” he said.

Altine said there was no confirmation that any of the attackers had been killed despite the reported gun battle with security forces.

“As of the time of writing this report, we have not seen the body of even one Lakurawa fighter that the soldiers succeeded in killing,” he said.

Joseph Ezeokafor

By Ogechi Eloka

Kidnapped Anambra businessman, Joseph Ezeokafor chairman of Jezco Group of Companies, popularly known as Jezco, has regained his freedom.

According to a social media Facebook post by Fred Chukwuelobe, versatile journalist and public affairs commentator, Ezeokafor was released near the boundary between Enugu and Anambra States, close to Ebenebe, near Awka. He was subsequently picked up late at night (Friday) by a family member.

Ezeokafor, the father of popular social media personality Jowi Zaza, was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday while on his way to a prayer ground in Awka, Anambra State.

His release came after days in captivity, during which his abductors reportedly established contact with his family and initially demanded a ransom of N700 million before allegedly raising the demand to N1.5 billion.

Details surrounding his release, including whether any ransom was paid and where he was released, were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.

The development is, however, a major relief to the family, friends and associates of the businessman, whose abduction had generated widespread concern across Anambra and beyond.

Ezeokafor is the founder of Jezco Oil and Lubricants, a business he established in 1980 and subsequently expanded into other areas of manufacturing and business.
