DSS neutralises three terrorists, rescue nine kidnapped victims in Kwara
*** Community alleges abductors rejected N155m ransome, threaten to marry off their daughters, kill others
From Lukman Adebayo, (Ilorin)
A combined intelligence-led operation by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Forest Guards has successfully led to the elimination of three suspected terrorists and escue the rescue of nine kidnap victims during a gun battle in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
This was disclosed on Wednesday by officials of the Ekiti Local government area of the state
Confirming the rescue operation, peaking Chief Press Secretary to the chairman of Ekiti LGA, Prince Dada Sunday, said the rescued victims included farmers who were abducted from their farmlands and others who had earlier been abducted in neighbouring Ekiti State, adding that the terrorists abandoned their captives and flee after facing heavy gunfire from the security agencies
According to him, the operation, also involved the Kwara State Forest Guards, local hunters and vigilantes, wam at the Obbo Aiyegunle, Ejiu Ora and Osi axes of Ekiti LGA bordering Ekiti and Kwara states.
He added that intelligence gathered by security agencies led to the successful rescue mission.
One of the rescued victims, Umaru Muazu of Obbo Aiyegunle, who recounted their ordeal in the hands of the terrorists, said they abducted him and his son.
“They came from nowhere and pointed a gun to my head. Four of them took me and my son. They also took my friend’s motorcycle before marching us into the bush,” he recounted. Another rescued farmer, Ibrahim Danga, said the victims had been held captive before security operatives arrived and engaged the kidnappers.
Also a member of the Kwara Forest Guards, Owolabi Adebayo, confirmed that the operation was intelligence-driven.
“We neutralised three of them and rescued nine victims. They were heavily armed and possessed different types of firearms. We need more operational equipment, including body armour, binoculars, night vision goggles, walkie talkies and ammunition to effectively confront them,” he declared.
This is even as another community in Kwara State has appealed to the federal government to swiftly take actions to secure the release of its 176 residents that were abducted by terrorists in Kaiama Local Government Area, who have been held by their abductors for over six months
Leaders of the Kaima community alleged on Wednesday that t the terrorists have turned down the sum of N155m which it raised through crowdfunding, threatening to marry off the “beautiful” female captives and kill the others.
According to them, the victims’ relatives had raised more than N155 million through community crowdfunding in an attempt to secure the release of the captives but alleged that the terrorists rejected the ransom, leaving the victims to remain in captivity.
Speaking in a BBC Housa service interview which was monitored by our correspondent a resident of Kaima, Abdul Ibrahim,, alleged that the terrorists warned they would force the attractive female captives into marriage while killing the remaining hostages if their demands were not met.
He appealed to the Kwara State government, the federal government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the captives, saying families had exhausted virtually every available option without anysuccess
He noted that the affected communities had mobilised and raised over N155 million as ransom in a desperate bid to secure the victims’ freedom, but the money was allegedly rejected by the abductors.
“We have done everything within our means. The money was raised, yet our people have not been released. Their suffering continues, and families are living in agony,” he said.
He regretted that peaceful demonstrations organised by the community had not yielded any response, since it has failed to attract the desired intervention.
Also the Dan Sardaukin Kaiama, Suleiman Bukata appealed to the federal and Kwara state governments as well as security agencies to replicate the efforts that recently led to the rescue of abductees from Oyo State by extending similar operations to Kaiama, where hundreds of residents have remained in terrorists’ camps for months.

Lakurawa terrorist group kills 4 soldiers in deadly Sokoto attack

By Mohammadu Ahmad
At least four soldiers are feared dead following an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbe, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on Friday.
The attackers, reportedly numbering more than 300, stormed the town on motorcycles and engaged troops in a fierce gun battle before allegedly attacking shops, vehicles and a hospital.
The heavily armed group was said to have arrived in Kebbe at about 10am, prompting soldiers deployed at a military base on the outskirts of the town to engage them.
A security expert in the state, Bashar Altine, who confirmed the incident, said four soldiers were feared to have died during the confrontation.
However, the reported casualty figure could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
The spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, also confirmed that an attack occurred but said the command was still working to establish the details.
Rufai said he could not confirm reports of casualties, including the alleged deaths of the four soldiers.
Attempts to obtain confirmation from the spokesman of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, were unsuccessful, as he had yet to respond to a message sent to him as of press time.
Altine said the attackers moved into the heart of Kebbe after the confrontation with the troops, particularly the Sabon Gari area, where they allegedly broke into shops and stole large quantities of mobile phones and bread.
He said the militants also attacked a military vehicle equipped with a mounted rocket-propelled grenade, damaging three tyres and breaking its windscreen.
The attackers reportedly proceeded to the General Hospital, Kebbe, where they allegedly smashed the windows of vehicles parked within the hospital premises, including the vehicle of the Divisional Police Officer and an ambulance.
“They also seized mobile phones belonging to patients at the hospital,” Altine added.
He further alleged that the terrorists took four motorcycles belonging to residents before beginning their withdrawal from the town.
According to Altine, the attackers eventually left Kebbe in the evening through the direction of the police station and proceeded towards communities west of the town.
“Reports from villages west of Kebbe indicate that they entered Ungushi town, one of the districts in Kebbe Local Government Area,” he said.
Altine said there was no confirmation that any of the attackers had been killed despite the reported gun battle with security forces.
“As of the time of writing this report, we have not seen the body of even one Lakurawa fighter that the soldiers succeeded in killing,” he said.

Kidnapped Anambra businessman, Joseph Ezeokafor chairman of Jezco Group of Companies, popularly known as Jezco, has regained his freedom.
According to a social media Facebook post by Fred Chukwuelobe, versatile journalist and public affairs commentator, Ezeokafor was released near the boundary between Enugu and Anambra States, close to Ebenebe, near Awka. He was subsequently picked up late at night (Friday) by a family member.
Ezeokafor, the father of popular social media personality Jowi Zaza, was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday while on his way to a prayer ground in Awka, Anambra State.
His release came after days in captivity, during which his abductors reportedly established contact with his family and initially demanded a ransom of N700 million before allegedly raising the demand to N1.5 billion.
Details surrounding his release, including whether any ransom was paid and where he was released, were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
The development is, however, a major relief to the family, friends and associates of the businessman, whose abduction had generated widespread concern across Anambra and beyond.
Ezeokafor is the founder of Jezco Oil and Lubricants, a business he established in 1980 and subsequently expanded into other areas of manufacturing and business.
