Bayelsa Poly ASUP begins indefinite strike over retired Rector’s reappointment
By our correspondent
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Bayelsa State Polytechnic, Aleibiri Chapter, has directed its members to withdraw their services from the institution beginning Monday, August 10, 2026, over the controversial reappointment of a retired former Rector as Rector of the Polytechnic.
The union said the decision followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Governing Council of the Polytechnic to reverse what it described as the purported reappointment of the retired former Rector without compliance with the provisions of the Bayelsa State Polytechnic Establishment Law.
In a statement signed by the Chapter Chairman, Dr. Oyin-Emi Frank Ogbomah, ASUP alleged that the Governing Council failed to follow the statutory procedure for the appointment of a substantive Rector.
According to the union, the law requires the position of Rector to be advertised to enable eligible serving academic staff to apply.
It further stated that the law provides for the constitution of a Search Team comprising two Chief Lecturers from the Academic Board and two other Chief Lecturers who are not members of the Academic Board.
ASUP said the law also provides for a Joint Council and Academic Board Selection Board comprising the Council Chairman, two members of Council and two Chief Lecturers who were not members of the Search Team.
The union added that the Selection Board is expected to recommend the three best candidates to the Visitor for appointment.
ASUP maintained that none of the procedures were followed in the case of the Polytechnic, arguing that the Governing Council does not have the statutory power to appoint a Rector.
“The Law does not give the Council the power to appoint a Rector. Only the Visitor, the Governor, has the power to appoint the Rector after due process has been followed,” the statement said.
The union said it had consistently kept its Zonal Coordinator and National President informed throughout the dispute, adding that the national leadership directed the Chapter at every stage of the struggle, including the contents of correspondence sent to the Governing Council and the state government.
According to ASUP, several letters, engagements with members of the Governing Council and the 14-day ultimatum failed to persuade the Council to reverse the appointment.
The union also cited the recent action of the Governing Council of Isaac Jasper Boro College of Education (IJBCOE), Sagbama, which advertised the position of Provost in accordance with the law establishing the institution.
ASUP said the development occurred despite an earlier state government announcement naming the current occupant as Provost.
The union therefore urged the Bayelsa State Polytechnic Governing Council to emulate the IJBCOE council by advertising the position of Rector and allowing all qualified serving academic staff to compete for the position.
It accused the Polytechnic Governing Council of favouring a retired former Rector over serving Chief Lecturers, describing the development as unacceptable to the union.
ASUP further argued that no tertiary institution owned by the Bayelsa State Government is currently headed, or has previously been headed, by a retiree.
“BYSPOLY will not be used to set such a dangerous precedent in the State or in Nigeria,” the union declared.
The union said its action was aimed at protecting the integrity of the Polytechnic system and ensuring adherence to due process by institutions owned by the state government.
Consequently, ASUP directed all its members at the Polytechnic to stay away from work from Monday, August 10, 2026, pending further directives from its national body.
The union said the notice of the industrial action had already been communicated to the Governing Council, while the Visitor to the Polytechnic, Governor Douye Diri, would also be formally informed on Monday.
The union urged members requiring further information on the strike to contact the Chapter Chairman.
The development is expected to further heighten the dispute over the leadership of the Bayelsa State Polytechnic and could disrupt academic and administrative activities at the institution if no resolution is reached.

Lakurawa terrorist group kills 4 soldiers in deadly Sokoto attack

By Mohammadu Ahmad
At least four soldiers are feared dead following an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbe, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on Friday.
The attackers, reportedly numbering more than 300, stormed the town on motorcycles and engaged troops in a fierce gun battle before allegedly attacking shops, vehicles and a hospital.
The heavily armed group was said to have arrived in Kebbe at about 10am, prompting soldiers deployed at a military base on the outskirts of the town to engage them.
A security expert in the state, Bashar Altine, who confirmed the incident, said four soldiers were feared to have died during the confrontation.
However, the reported casualty figure could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
The spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, also confirmed that an attack occurred but said the command was still working to establish the details.
Rufai said he could not confirm reports of casualties, including the alleged deaths of the four soldiers.
Attempts to obtain confirmation from the spokesman of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, were unsuccessful, as he had yet to respond to a message sent to him as of press time.
Altine said the attackers moved into the heart of Kebbe after the confrontation with the troops, particularly the Sabon Gari area, where they allegedly broke into shops and stole large quantities of mobile phones and bread.
He said the militants also attacked a military vehicle equipped with a mounted rocket-propelled grenade, damaging three tyres and breaking its windscreen.
The attackers reportedly proceeded to the General Hospital, Kebbe, where they allegedly smashed the windows of vehicles parked within the hospital premises, including the vehicle of the Divisional Police Officer and an ambulance.
“They also seized mobile phones belonging to patients at the hospital,” Altine added.
He further alleged that the terrorists took four motorcycles belonging to residents before beginning their withdrawal from the town.
According to Altine, the attackers eventually left Kebbe in the evening through the direction of the police station and proceeded towards communities west of the town.
“Reports from villages west of Kebbe indicate that they entered Ungushi town, one of the districts in Kebbe Local Government Area,” he said.
Altine said there was no confirmation that any of the attackers had been killed despite the reported gun battle with security forces.
“As of the time of writing this report, we have not seen the body of even one Lakurawa fighter that the soldiers succeeded in killing,” he said.

Anambra billionaire businessman Joseph Ezeokafor (Jezco) regains freedom from kidnappers’ den

Joseph Ezeokafor
By Ogechi Eloka
Kidnapped Anambra businessman, Joseph Ezeokafor chairman of Jezco Group of Companies, popularly known as Jezco, has regained his freedom.
According to a social media Facebook post by Fred Chukwuelobe, versatile journalist and public affairs commentator, Ezeokafor was released near the boundary between Enugu and Anambra States, close to Ebenebe, near Awka. He was subsequently picked up late at night (Friday) by a family member.
Ezeokafor, the father of popular social media personality Jowi Zaza, was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday while on his way to a prayer ground in Awka, Anambra State.
His release came after days in captivity, during which his abductors reportedly established contact with his family and initially demanded a ransom of N700 million before allegedly raising the demand to N1.5 billion.
Details surrounding his release, including whether any ransom was paid and where he was released, were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
The development is, however, a major relief to the family, friends and associates of the businessman, whose abduction had generated widespread concern across Anambra and beyond.
Ezeokafor is the founder of Jezco Oil and Lubricants, a business he established in 1980 and subsequently expanded into other areas of manufacturing and business.
