Osun election: Yiaga Africa rates poll high, charges INEC, police on reforms ahead of 2027 elections
From Ganiyu Olarewaju (Oshogbo)
Civil Society Organisation Yiaga Africa has state that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies have shown some signs of improvement from the past with their conduct at last Saturday’s governorship election in Odin state
The pro democracy group explained on Sunday that INEC largely passed the test of electoral integrity during the governorship election.
Addressing journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, Dr Asmau Maikudi, Chairperson of the 2026 Osun Election Observation Mission for Yiaga Africa, described the poll as a definitive test of electoral preparedness, security neutrality and public trust.
Describing the Osun election w
as a crucial off-cycle ballot that served as the final major governorship contest before the 2027 general elections as well as a critical test of the Electoral Act 2026 and new regulatory frameworks, Yiaga Africa noted that “with the election concluded, the evidence suggests that INEC and security agencies largely passed that test.”
Yiaga Africa commended the people of Osun for their resilience and high voter turnout, encouraging them to sustain this democratic spirit by holding elected officials accountable to their campaign promises.
It however advised the commission to issue binding, uniform guidance on the acceptance of downloadable PVCs, conduct a comprehensive post-election technical audit of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices to address deployment and functional hiccups, publish the causes of biometric authentication failures, and ensure more rigorous training and oversight of ad hoc field personnel.
The group similarly called on political parties to deepen their commitment to democratic values by investing in the thorough training of polling agents on the Electoral Act 2026 and INEC guidelines.
“The police, EFCC, and ICPC should extend enforcement beyond immediate polling unit perimeters to crack down on vote-buying and financial inducements carried out by party agents and financiers in surrounding areas,” Yiaga said.

Hardship: Public servants begin three-day warning strike

By Our Reporter
Public servants across Nigeria have commenced a three-day warning strike following a directive by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council over what the workers described as worsening economic and mental hardship.
The industrial action, which began at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026, is expected to run through Sunday, October 4.
The council directed its national and state leadership to mobilise workers for the action, with the directive contained in a circular dated October 1 and signed by the National Secretary of the JNPSNC, Olowoyo Gbenga.
The circular urged the council’s leadership to ensure that the strike notice reached workers across the country.
The decision, according to the council, followed the Federal Government’s alleged failure to respond to demands earlier presented to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21, 2026.

Explaining the commencement of the industrial action, the council stated, “Consequent upon the above, the strike shall start with effect from midnight on Friday, 2nd October, 2026 to Sunday October 4th, 2026.”
The council called on public servants at the federal, state and local government levels to participate in the warning strike, saying the action was aimed at drawing attention to the economic difficulties confronting workers and their dependants.
It stated, “In the same vein, all public servants in the services of federal, state and local governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, most especially, all workers, their dependants, vulnerable and hapless Nigerians are groaning terribly under the present economic hardship.”
The JNPSNC further expressed concern over the impact of the economic situation on workers, saying, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”
It also directed its leaders to commence immediate mobilisation for the industrial action, declaring, “The time to act and mobilise workers for the three-day warning strike is now!!!”
The warning strike comes against the backdrop of demands earlier submitted by the council to the Federal Government for measures to ease the pressure of rising living costs on workers.
Among the demands were a reduction in the price of petrol, an immediate wage award for workers and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.
The council had reportedly asked the Federal Government to bring down the pump price of petrol to N500 per litre, approve an immediate wage award and constitute a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage.
The demands followed continued concerns over the declining purchasing power of workers amid increases in the prices of essential commodities, transportation and other household needs.
In its latest circular, the council urged its members to circulate the strike notice and expressed optimism about the outcome of the industrial action.
“Please, disseminate the information!!! Surely, there is victory for us!!!” the circular added.
The council maintained that the warning strike would proceed as scheduled, with public servants across the federal, state and local government services expected to take part.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Ministry of Labour were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
