2027: Forum of LG chairmen promises nation-wide mobilisation for Tinubu
Abu Umar
The All Progressives Congress, (APC), Local Government Chairmen’s Forum has vowed to mobilise its 685 members of 31 states of the federation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general election.
This was revealed at the party National Secretariat by the forum chairman, and chairman, Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State, Dr Mustafa Jibril Alheri, pledging to spearhead a nation-wide grassroots mobilisation campaign in support of the party and President Tinubu, noting that the team would organise a mega rally in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to endorse Mr President for a second term in office.
Dr Alheri, who led other officials and members of the forum on a courtesy call to the party National Chairman, Prof Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda said the forum comprising leaders at the third tier of government are more closer to the grassroots and had commenced nationwide mobilisation in favour of President Tinubu.
“The Progressive Local Government Chairmen for President Tinubu is a strategic grassroots organisation comprising executive chairmen of local government councils under the APC in Nigeria.
“This organisation here today is dedicated to mobilising grassroots support for the policies, programmes, and the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while promoting the ideals and vision of the APC.
“We, the local government chairmen, have remained the closest tier of government to the people, and our leadership has always played decisive role in election outcomes.
“Successes of the APC in past elections, especially in the forthcoming election, is going to be anchored on the strength of local government actors and community influencers who will translate national messages into local realities.
“We are the closest to the grassroots. We have our structures down to the grassroots. We have the community trust. We have our administrative structures. We have the grassroots intelligence, and that’s the reason why we have come together today to show our support for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, because we have not had any President in the history of Nigeria who has shown his love for the local governments,” he said.
He stressed that President Tinubu believes that as the local governments are strengthened, resources will reach down to the people, and there will be a great country.
“The administration’s achievements in other sectors and efforts to strengthen local government autonomy, increased support for the President and the party at the grassroots.”
He however, appealed to the party leadership to facilitate stronger collaboration between the forum and the Progressives Governors’ Forum, PGF, to deepen grassroots coordination ahead of the 2027 elections.
In his remarks, the Party National Chairman, Prof Yilwatda urged the forum to eradicate poverty from the grassroots saying: “If they say there is multidimensional poverty in your local government, you are responsible because it is you who provides access to education, water, sanitation, health and infrastructure, so, it is your work.
“You are going to work with the National Secretary because all the administrative activities of the party are under him. The National Chairman doesn’t take administrative decisions.
“I would like you to work in partnership with the Progressive Institute, TPI. I will also talk with the National Secretary, Basiru Surajudeen to link you up with Governor Hope Uzodimma, chairman, PGF, so that we don’t have internal fight between the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON, and the Progressive Local Government Chairmen, just like we have the Progressive Governors’ Forum and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, we have a symmetry between them and we have a working relationship between them.
“We are prepared for you. We will work with you. We will support you. We will stand by you. We will ensure that we have a strong partnership that will give this party a strong victory in 2027,” Yilwatda noted.

Lakurawa terrorist group kills 4 soldiers in deadly Sokoto attack

By Mohammadu Ahmad
At least four soldiers are feared dead following an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbe, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on Friday.
The attackers, reportedly numbering more than 300, stormed the town on motorcycles and engaged troops in a fierce gun battle before allegedly attacking shops, vehicles and a hospital.
The heavily armed group was said to have arrived in Kebbe at about 10am, prompting soldiers deployed at a military base on the outskirts of the town to engage them.
A security expert in the state, Bashar Altine, who confirmed the incident, said four soldiers were feared to have died during the confrontation.
However, the reported casualty figure could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
The spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, also confirmed that an attack occurred but said the command was still working to establish the details.
Rufai said he could not confirm reports of casualties, including the alleged deaths of the four soldiers.
Attempts to obtain confirmation from the spokesman of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, were unsuccessful, as he had yet to respond to a message sent to him as of press time.
Altine said the attackers moved into the heart of Kebbe after the confrontation with the troops, particularly the Sabon Gari area, where they allegedly broke into shops and stole large quantities of mobile phones and bread.
He said the militants also attacked a military vehicle equipped with a mounted rocket-propelled grenade, damaging three tyres and breaking its windscreen.
The attackers reportedly proceeded to the General Hospital, Kebbe, where they allegedly smashed the windows of vehicles parked within the hospital premises, including the vehicle of the Divisional Police Officer and an ambulance.
“They also seized mobile phones belonging to patients at the hospital,” Altine added.
He further alleged that the terrorists took four motorcycles belonging to residents before beginning their withdrawal from the town.
According to Altine, the attackers eventually left Kebbe in the evening through the direction of the police station and proceeded towards communities west of the town.
“Reports from villages west of Kebbe indicate that they entered Ungushi town, one of the districts in Kebbe Local Government Area,” he said.
Altine said there was no confirmation that any of the attackers had been killed despite the reported gun battle with security forces.
“As of the time of writing this report, we have not seen the body of even one Lakurawa fighter that the soldiers succeeded in killing,” he said.

Joseph Ezeokafor
By Ogechi Eloka
Kidnapped Anambra businessman, Joseph Ezeokafor chairman of Jezco Group of Companies, popularly known as Jezco, has regained his freedom.
According to a social media Facebook post by Fred Chukwuelobe, versatile journalist and public affairs commentator, Ezeokafor was released near the boundary between Enugu and Anambra States, close to Ebenebe, near Awka. He was subsequently picked up late at night (Friday) by a family member.
Ezeokafor, the father of popular social media personality Jowi Zaza, was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday while on his way to a prayer ground in Awka, Anambra State.
His release came after days in captivity, during which his abductors reportedly established contact with his family and initially demanded a ransom of N700 million before allegedly raising the demand to N1.5 billion.
Details surrounding his release, including whether any ransom was paid and where he was released, were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
The development is, however, a major relief to the family, friends and associates of the businessman, whose abduction had generated widespread concern across Anambra and beyond.
Ezeokafor is the founder of Jezco Oil and Lubricants, a business he established in 1980 and subsequently expanded into other areas of manufacturing and business.
