2027: APM drags INEC, PRP, Buba to Court over Bauchi guber ticket

Published

Abubakar Umar

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM), has filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Bauchi, challenging the eligibility of Senator Shehu Buba Umar to contest the 2027 governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

The Legal Adviser of APM, Barr. Jidauna Tula, disclosed this to reporters in Bauchi on Monday.

He said the suit, numbered FHC/BAU/CS/68/2026, seeks the interpretation of Sections 77(4), 77(5) and 77(6) of the Electoral Act, 2026 with regard to the nomination of Senator Buba as PRP governorship candidate.

The defendants in the suit are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Peoples Redemption Party, (PRP) and Senator Shehu Buba.

Tula said Senator Buba had earlier contested primary election under the All Progressives Congress(APC) and failed, but later emerged as candidate under PRP and his name was published by INEC.

Counsel to APM, Barr. Benjamin Sati, said the party wants the court to determine whether Buba’s emergence as PRP candidate is lawful, having regard to the provisions of the Electoral Act.

According to him, the suit raises issues including whether Buba was eligible to be voted for in the PRP governorship primary election held on May 25, 2026, given that his name did not appear on the party’s membership register submitted to INEC within the statutory period.

He said the party is also asking the court to determine whether PRP complied with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act when it submitted its register on or before May 10, 2026 and conducted its primary on May 25, 2026.

Other issues for determination include whether by virtue of Section 77(6), PRP could lawfully rely on any membership register other than the one submitted to INEC within the statutory period to establish Buba’s eligibility, and whether INEC can lawfully retain his name on the final list of candidates if his nomination contravened the Act.

APM is asking the court to declare that the publication by INEC on October 10, 2026, including the name of Shehu Buba as PRP governorship candidate, is unlawful, null and void.

The party also asked the court to direct INEC to remove Buba’s name from its final list of candidates for the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.

Tula explained that Section 77(4) prescribes 21 days before primary election within which a political party must make its membership register available to INEC, while Section 77(5) provides that only members whose names are contained in the register are eligible to vote and be voted for.

He added that Section 77(6) prohibits a political party from using for its primary a different membership register from the one submitted to INEC, alleging that PRP was required to submit its register on or before May 10, 2026 and Buba’s name was absent as at date of submission because he remained a member of APC as at May 19, 2026.

ENDSARS: Six years after, we failed to learn our lessons, Baba-Ahmed blasts FG

Published

The national chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has said six years after the #EndSARS protest, Nigeria has failed to learn lessons from the event.

Baba-Ahmed, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, said the issues that forced young Nigerians to the streets in 2020 are still present.

He said the disbandment of SARS was not enough as police brutality, lack of accountability and bad governance have continued.

According to him, the judicial panels set up after the protest raised hope but their recommendations were not fully implemented.

He said the fact that police still fired tear gas at youths marking the 6th anniversary at Lekki Toll Gate today shows that nothing has changed.

“We have not shown our young people that protesting for good governance is not a crime. Until justice is served for those who died at Lekki and compensation is paid, the wound will remain,” he said.

Group accuses Edo govt of political vendetta over arrest, arraignment of nonagenarian

Our Reporter

The Peoples’ Assembly for Good Governance (PAGG) has condemned what it described as intimidation of the opposition by the Edo State Government using state apparatus.

The condemnation followed the arraignment of the father of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Edo South Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, Hon.Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, over alleged trumped-up charges.

It will be recalled that the 90-year-old, Pa Joseph Iduoriyekemwen, was arrested by armed policemen from the Edo State Police Command at about 4 a.m. from his residence in Amagba, a suburb of Benin City, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

The nonagenarian was arraigned alongside three others at the Edo State Special Criminal Court on Monday, October 19, 2026, on allegations of cultism, conspiracy, attempted murder and land dispute. They were admitted to bail in the sum of ₦1 million each.

Reacting to the development, PAGG, in a statement jointly signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Samson Isibor, and National Secretary, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nkama, described the arrest and arraignment as an attempt to muzzle the opposition ahead of the elections.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the arrest and arraignment of Pa Iduoriyekemwen over alleged cultism, attempted murder and other false charges by policemen who invaded his residence in commando style, at a time when he was supposed to be enjoying his sleep.

“How could they allege that a 90-year-old great-grandfather is a cultist? How on earth could they have charged him to a Special Court that is not known to our Constitution?

“The arraignment by the police is nothing but the hand of Esau and the voice of Jacob. We make bold to say that the real target of the whole incident is the ADC senatorial candidate, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, with the

” the group said.

The Group warned that no amount of intimidation and victimization will suppress the voice of opposition in the state, adding that the people are ready to do the needful.

“This present government in Edo state is very intolerant to the opposition, whereas opposition in whatever form is the beauty of democracy.

“Let it be known that the good people of Edo can see the deceit of the current government and the pain it is inflicting on them. They know what to do and are ready to vote out bad governance, come 2027”, it added.

“We, therefore, call on Governor Monday Okpebholo to order the immediate withdrawal of the case against Pa Iduoriyemkewen in the interest of peace, remembering that Hon Iduoriyekme has served this state meritorious,” Isibor posited.
