Stakeholders urge zero tolerance to gender-based violence in schools, communities

Stakeholders have called for zero tolerance to Gender-Based Violence, GBV, in schools and communities, warning that abuse undermines development and violates young people’s right to safety.

The call was made on Wednesday in Bauchi during a one-day sensitization on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition, VAPP, Law at Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, ATAP. The programme was organized by the Bauchi State Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, and the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP).

Speaking at the event, Deborah Tabara, Gender and Reproductive Health Analyst and Coordinator, UNFPA Bauchi, said protecting young people must come first if development goals are to be met.

“We are the reproductive health arm of the United Nations. Our mission is to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every child is safe, and every young person achieves their potential,” Tabara said.

“Addressing GBV is key to achieving UNFPA’s three transformative goals, and we cannot get there if fear and abuse are allowed on campus.”

She described GBV as a development issue, not just a social one.

“Whether you are a girl or a boy, a woman or a man, gender-based violence has devastating effects in public or private spaces. It impedes development because when a person is affected by it, there is no advancement,” she said.

Tabara stressed that accountability must be immediate.

“Tolerance for gender-based violence must be zero. Everyone has a responsibility to ensure it does not occur, between students, lecturers, or both. When there is no deterrence, the perpetrator continues. But when we speak up, GBV can be addressed.”

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary and Solicitor General of Bauchi State, the Director of Public Prosecution, Barr. Garba Dabo Maleka, urged students to reject sexual exploitation for grades and to use available reporting channels.

“You are future leaders, engineers and scientists. We want you to be safe and prepared. Do not select sex as a way of getting marks or allocation,” Maleka said.

He listed the DPP’s office, the Permanent Secretary, the police and campus counselors as points of contact, and advised rape victims to seek immediate medical attention.

ATAP management said it is aligning fully with the state policy to eradicate GBV.

Speaking for the Rector, Dr. Hashim Sabo Bello, the Director of Ethics and Compliance, Dr. Alhaji Abdulkadir Waziri, said the polytechnic already has a gender and sexual harassment committee and is taking disciplinary and legal action against offenders.

“The theme is timely and aligned with our core values of dignity, integrity and respect for human dignity,” he said.

Gender Desk Officer at the Ministry of Justice, Maimuna Ibrahim Yusuf, called on all tertiary institutions in Bauchi to establish functional gender desks and grievance committees.

“The objective is to educate students and staff on what constitutes GBV, its legal implications, and to strengthen reporting channels,” she said.

UNFPA, the Ministry of Justice and ATAP announced a new partnership to entrench accountability on campus through clearer reporting pathways and faster response for survivors.

The workshop drew students, faculty, counselors and security officials. The Ministry of Justice said it will continue working with school managements to ensure gender desks are accessible, while partners including J4PD said they will work with health stakeholders, journalists and community groups to drive awareness and early action on GBV prevention in the coming months.

Hardship: Public servants begin three-day warning strike

Published

By Our Reporter

Public servants across Nigeria have commenced a three-day warning strike following a directive by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council over what the workers described as worsening economic and mental hardship.

The industrial action, which began at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026, is expected to run through Sunday, October 4.

The council directed its national and state leadership to mobilise workers for the action, with the directive contained in a circular dated October 1 and signed by the National Secretary of the JNPSNC, Olowoyo Gbenga.

The circular urged the council’s leadership to ensure that the strike notice reached workers across the country.

The decision, according to the council, followed the Federal Government’s alleged failure to respond to demands earlier presented to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated September 21, 2026.

Explaining the commencement of the industrial action, the council stated, “Consequent upon the above, the strike shall start with effect from midnight on Friday, 2nd October, 2026 to Sunday October 4th, 2026.”

The council called on public servants at the federal, state and local government levels to participate in the warning strike, saying the action was aimed at drawing attention to the economic difficulties confronting workers and their dependants.

It stated, “In the same vein, all public servants in the services of federal, state and local governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, most especially, all workers, their dependants, vulnerable and hapless Nigerians are groaning terribly under the present economic hardship.”

The JNPSNC further expressed concern over the impact of the economic situation on workers, saying, “The economic and mental hardships are becoming unbearable and frustrating.”

It also directed its leaders to commence immediate mobilisation for the industrial action, declaring, “The time to act and mobilise workers for the three-day warning strike is now!!!”

The warning strike comes against the backdrop of demands earlier submitted by the council to the Federal Government for measures to ease the pressure of rising living costs on workers.

Among the demands were a reduction in the price of petrol, an immediate wage award for workers and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council had reportedly asked the Federal Government to bring down the pump price of petrol to N500 per litre, approve an immediate wage award and constitute a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage.

The demands followed continued concerns over the declining purchasing power of workers amid increases in the prices of essential commodities, transportation and other household needs.

In its latest circular, the council urged its members to circulate the strike notice and expressed optimism about the outcome of the industrial action.

“Please, disseminate the information!!! Surely, there is victory for us!!!” the circular added.

The council maintained that the warning strike would proceed as scheduled, with public servants across the federal, state and local government services expected to take part.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Ministry of Labour were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
